Glass furnace vs Magma glass furnace
« on: June 22, 2009, 09:25:43 pm »

I just had a glassmaker go fey, and he wouldn't go to claim a workshop until I made a non-magma powered glass furnace. Whats the deal?

Edit: He made a bed

Sometimes they want the regular furnaces. This goes for for forges, too.

If there are factors that determine whether they want the regular or magma powered furnaces, we don't know what they are. So for the most part, it's random.

Has anyone ever had a moody dwarf select a magma forge, smelter, or glass furnace?

Whoa.  I never realized that could happen.  Yikes.  I guess I should quip up a few non-magma workshops, just to be on the safe side.  But now I'm wondering, is it possible to have a workshop standing by for moods that doesn't get staffed or queue up jobs from the task manager?  For instance, could I build a non-magma glass furnace, set it so that the only guy who's allowed to use it is a guy that doesn't have the glassmaker task active, then queue up ten iterations of the "make glass portal" job, set to repeat?  I'll test it later this evening, but it'd be a nice change of pace to know an idea's dumb before I do it.

Instead of mucking around with the workshop profile, you could just queue ten jobs and suspend them.

I had a moody goblin go to my magma forge and make an iron ring. So it happens sometimes.

A moody dwarf will evict a worker and interrupt their current task.  No worries.

(Besides, a mood lasts for a month or two before driving a dwarf insane - a task will only take a day at most.)

I've also had an armorsmith who used a magma forge, if you need a second datapoint.

Don't dwarves not claim a magma powered building if it doesn't have sufficent magma levels below it?

I think the question related to the fact that regular forges used fuel and you'd be throwing fuel through the window if you had said regular forges being used via manager.

I think the easiest, least fussy and most obvious solution is to just... not build a regular forge until it is needed. You'll notice the need for it easily enough if the moody smith doesn't claim any of your magma-powered facilities.

Just look with 't' and forbid the block/anvil that the workshop is made from. No jobs will be assigned. Or you could mass forbid but that forbids any goods/materials in the shop from being stockpiled as well. You will almost certainly have to unforbid to allow the shop to be claimed by the moody dwarf.

I think the easiest, least fussy and most obvious solution is to just... not build a regular forge until it is needed.

I guess that would work too  :D

If still needed, an armor smith made an artifact copper low boot(menacing with something stupid of course) in a magma forge.

Yes, they'll claim either magma or regular workshops. Which one they claim is random, so if you have any trees on the map you may want to have a piece of charcoal or two for them.
