You need to get mechanisms for traps. First though, you need some rocks. Dig down until you hit some rock.

We need to set a up trap ASAP.  Spikes are the best way to go since they don't take mechanisms.

What else are you supposed to do? Hes asleep! Waiting for a dwarf to wake up when there is trouble is like waiting for the Fortress military to stop taking drinks while the enemy already killed half your population or telling a dwarf to pull a lever connected to a floodgate when there is gonna be a deadly flood upon your fort.
