Designable, moving machines.
« on: June 22, 2009, 01:27:24 pm »

Would it be possible to, at some point in the future, make machines which you could create in-game that perform certain functions? Like, for example, making a platform with wheels, a swinging arm, and a pickax for automated digging, or a ballista for a mobile killing machine. Perhaps they could be powered by steam engine? Or if that's too advanced for the time period, maybe a small waterwheel, or magma in some way, or maybe being able to use trapped vermin in hamster-wheels, or magic when that arc is implemented.

Does anyone know how this would be possible? Maybe add a new "chassis" building which can be sized and scaled and have special attachments built on it, or just build regular buildings on it. Maybe make new, special buildings which you can build like any other, but will do certain things, like wheels will make any floors on top of them move when the wheels are active, or a steam engine which provides power to a piston which in turn will provide power to an axle.

Thoughts, comments, etc.

Mobile constructions have been suggested in the past, including rotating platforms, walls on sliders, wheels, etc.

Steam engines have also been suggested, and generally rejected as being too advanced for the time period.

Automation would shift the focus from expertise and quality to raw materials and quantity. Mobile machinery would allow large, homogenous empires to exist. Both will make the game less interesting IMO.

I like the idea of carts and wheelbarrows and dollies for hauling purposes, but I don't like the use of mechanized automatons.

I share this opinion. Btw Mining carts/wheelbarrows etc. will be added to the game eventually.

As far as I'm concerned, the "designable" portion of the OP is the most interesting suggestion, and in my recollection, we haven't had too many of those. I'd love to be able to design mechanical traps from the ground up, for instance. It seems like, with all the hard geology we're getting, engineered mechanics-atleast primitive ones-should be possible, also.

Okay, so a direct steam engine construction isn't allowed, but with going with the build it from the ground up deal, what about making a giant steam powered pump using various constructions, just because someone sat there long enough to make something work? Who here wouldn't want the chance to make a rotating magma cannon that's super pressurized to shoot long distances? I think it'd be cool...

As a side note, I personally would love to build a totally huge fortress. To be able use something great than 16x16 would be just insane and totally awesome.

From what I understand, Toady's set against high pressure steam. Low pressure constructions? I dunno...maybe it's worth asking?

I'm personally for more realism, generally, so it wouldn't bother me to see it in the game, as long as it didn't become disruptive.

If a player bothers to build a huge, complicated steam chamber, that's great. If he builds them en masse, out-of-the-box, that will not improve gameplay.
