Problem with chains.
« on: June 22, 2009, 11:27:19 am »

I have a tamed Giant Cave Spider set up in a silk collection setup. The only thing I need now is a hostile creature to trigger its web slinging. For that purpose, I caught a lizardman from the local underground river. The problem now is: Whenever I try to hook the lizardman up to the copper chain in my setup, it attacks the person trying to chain it down, causing one of the two to die. I have tried making it unconscious by dropping it from 3 z levels up, but it still attacked my Dwarf. How do I make sure the transfer from the cage to the chain goes along without a riot?

As far as I know, your best bet is to build the cage the hostile is in near the restraint(like, RIGHT there) and hope for the best during the transfer.  The less space that needs to be transferred, the better.  Mind you this isn't an operation I would normally carry out, as far as I know, this is your best bet.

Also, consider placing a marksdwarf somewhere nearby that you can call quickly if things go badly.  Not close enough to attack if things go well, but near enough to get there if things go poorly might just save somebody's life.

If Dwarf Companion worked this would be so much easier... I'd just untame the GCS and chain a kitten. Also, the cage was 2 tiles away from the restraint when I tried to transfer the lizardman.

Apparently you need to be closer...or stop dealing with hostiles.  I've never tried for silk, but do tame spiders really need something hostile to attack to generate silk?  Real spiders don't work that way and the game does general seek realism.

What's wrong with Companion?  Need Python?  If you give us more information, we can actually help.

May have a better shot if you catch, say, a goblin snatcher, assuming they're still sending the gimpy trappable ones and not the master thieves. They're pretty puny unarmed (build the cage, mark his gear to be dumped), and just as hostile. Build a bunch of cage traps around the restraint so if he gets away he'll be re-caged and you can go through the motions again.

Congrats on successfully taming a GCS though. I honestly didn't even know that was POSSIBLE (or did you hack the game? Not sure if the Dungeon Master can tame them or not)

Ah yes, bait with something really weak...

As for taming, can't you tame pretty much anything short of a megabeast if you have the dungeon master?

You can tame them with a Dungeon Master. Also thanks. On a related note: I FINALLY got the transport underway, by building the cage right next to the restraint. I realized the room really does not need doors if neither the spider nor the lizard can move more than one tile. My spider is now producing web like crazy, spraying it all over my safe collecting zone. In case anyone cares, here is my setup. It only takes 7x5 tiles (but could probably be made smaller if you have problems with space). The output is enormous, I get about 10 webs every 30 seconds.

= means fortified wall
| and _ mean plain walls
S means spider (chained)
D means door
H means hostile creature (chained)
  _______
=           |  The door to the room is completely locked, to prevent hostile interruption spam
=           |   The two doors to the Cave Spider room are open, but set to not pet-passable
=  =D|    |  That causes the spider to path around, noticing the lizard. But as it cannot reach it,
=H=S|    |   due to the doors being not pet passable, it fires web at it. The web flies through both
=  =D|    |   sets of fortification, landing on the other side, where it can easily and quickly be
=           |   collected. As you can see, there is a lot of free space. If you wanted to, you could
D_______|   condense the room to, maybe 4x4

you could just build the cage, then hook it up to a lever and release the creature via lever

Code: [Select]
XGX
XCX
XXX
x = channel
g = channel with grate connected to lever
c = lever operated cage with giant cave spider (the same lever)

Not sure what adjustments need to be made with a tame one.

Tame giant cave spiders produce web when attacking a hostile creature? Hmm, I thought the consensus was that tamed giant cave spiders do no such thing.

Screw you, consensus!

Also, neat setup. I'm guessing this thing shoots out giant spider silk continuously and without interruption. In which case, nice factory you've made.

Yes, that seems to be a common misconception. I noticed it on accident, really. I had the spider chained up near my magma pit. When a fire imp attacked it, I noticed it shot web at it. That's when I had the idea of building the farm.

Also, it's not without interruption. The spider needs to "recharge" apparently. But it fires about every 30 seconds. I now built two additional farms, basically drowning my weaver in silk.

Maybe the idea would be to have two walls of fortification, and beyond the outer wall, you can have a free lizardman. You can do that by just building a cage, linking a lever to it, and then Pull the lever. With that setup, you can have the lizardman always running around, but the webs collect between the two fortifications. And when you want to collect them, perhaps have linked row of floodgates close so that GCS cannot find the lizardman, allowing the weaver to collect the silk without being caught in the crossfire.

Please note I have zero experience with the chasm or bottomless pit, so I have zero experience with GCS. So this setup is unproven.
