No, Planescape: Torment definitely belongs on there.

Indeed, and also if you like CRPGs...Temple of Elemental Evil must be on this list!  :P
yeah but Fallout 1 was the original of the Planescape genre sub-type.
Temple of elemental evil is like a 6th generation of the baldur's gate genre sub-type... making it far down the list of games one 'must play'. Having played Baldur's Gate, there is no reason to play Temple of EE if you are just looking to experience 'types of games' and 'gaming experiences'... Temple adds nothing to the genre that was not already there- put in place by other games (i.e., Badlur's).
(just fyi, I am making up the term genre sub-type... I am trying to define the 'type' of game these are...)

Total Annihilation.
Space Rangers 1&2.
At least one GTA.
Carmageddon, either 1 or 2.
Robot Arena 2, to get a feel for the definition of "user-created content".
Master of Magic.
If you like WW2 air combat, IL-2 Sturmovik.
...

Tetris.

ninja-edit: "genre subtype" is not an unknown word, but the term "sub-genre" is used more frequently. And Planescape:Torment is still unique, because of its unique approach to the character and storyline.

Total Annihilation.
Yes. Good call on TA.

If you like WW2 air combat, IL-2 Sturmovik.
I was thinking of putting IL2 on my list... but for some reason decided not to... I'm not sure why. But having seen you put it down, I am going to add it to my list too...

I knew I was on to something!

I have to get Daggerfall working, sometime. Is there a tried and true way, yet? Recent attempts show that DOSBox can't do it quickly enough (for me) and installing it normally is a nightmare.

+Harvest Moon. Any. Probably the only decent RPG / Farming Sim out there, and if the thought of a farming sim seems terrifying to you, I'd urge you to give it a try... it's strangely addicting. I'd recommend either the PSX title, Back to Nature, or the GBA one, Friends of Mineral Town. They're almost identical save for graphics and sound.

I have to second Majora's Mask. Totally blew Ocarina of Time away in ... everything, for me. Having trouble thinking up new ones...

+God Hand. A call back to old brawler type games. The graphics don't stand out in any way, but the music is incredibly fitting at all times- either hilarious or dramatic. But you can't properly convey its sense of stature as a game without seeing it or better yet, playing it. Hell, the trailer flashes the text "This game is hard - Ball Bustingly Hard - But Fair"!

good luck.
I got it to run on a winXP machine a couple years back... I think I installed it legit, and via the blessing of some secretive game god, I got it to run with the compatibility settings set to ancient or something like that.
I know hotu ... the, um, original hotu? ... had/has it in some form that worked right out of the proverbial box on a winXP machine for me too.

At least it is not as hard to install as Ultima 7 was... when Ultima 7 was brand new... I remember it took like 5 hours tweaking around to get Ultima to play for the first time. Exult was a godsend. Ultima 7 is prolly one of the only games that got easier to install as time went on:-)

Oh yes, Exult is a blessing, truly. I need to find this god, and sacrifice some unicorns and dragons to them...

DAMMIT! How the hell did I forget that one too! Ugh, someone just shoot me already.

I spent five minutes staring into my monitor, mentally telling myself that I HAD to think of something new, hehe.

Also have to second Okenido's mention of Yume Nikki. Man, that game is freaky. For a game where you mostly explore with RPG-esque controls, it manages to be fun as hell. The environments are extremely unique and diverse. And CREEPY.

Edit: Also have to second Silent Storm, but dammit, all the time I spent finding it was wasted when I found that my computer made it run like molasses. Backwards. Still, opening fire on a door full auto and killing three people hiding behind it? That's good times.
