the Great Defrost
« on: June 21, 2009, 11:49:14 pm »

so ive almost finished defrosting a constantly frozen brook in my region by channeling magma to run underneith it. this is is awsome, because i can now hopefully start an underground forest this frozen land.

will fish or anything return to the stream? can i dig out still ice and dump it in a pit, then defrost the ice rocks like above to make warm pools for bathing/drowning/drinking from wells.

and if so i will be looking to drop a dwarf into the water, remove the heat source quick enough (so he hasnt drowned) then hopefully the water will freeze with han solo in it.

An issue that might be a problem: While you can get magma under most of the brook, the tiles touching the map edges would not be affected because one cannot dig out the map edges, and you need magma under there to make them warm. Thus ice will block the flow.

That is, unless you smooth and carve fortification on the edge. Then magma will flow into those tiles and warm the ice above it. From tests done it seems magma does not fall off the map sides, so you don't need to worry about wasting magma.

What happens if he smooths and fortifies the ice blocks at the edge of the map?

Do note that you can't make an underground forest unless you've gotten the message "You have discovered an underground [river|pool]." Without that message, underground plants do not grow.

Ice rocks moved indoors will melt into stacks of "water", which are a useless item. To get water, the fluid, you have to drop intact natural (that is, non-constructed) ice walls down into a non-freezing Z layer.

You can fish turtles out of any water source. You might be able to get other vermin fish out of your defrosted brook; I don't know. You won't get any of the larger fish (that show up on the units screen) like carp, though.

I don't think you can catch large fish through fishing.

Does that work for water as well? Can I carve a fortification in the last tile to the edge and use that to drain water off the map? That would make my waterfall project SOOO much easier. My only reliable water source in an underground river that is VERY short, it isn't even a screen long before it plummets 12 Z levels and drops into a bottomless pit. Having to dig a pump tower all the way up to my dining room and then a drain all the way back to that pit would be a huge hassle.

The edge fortifications trick is a bit hit-or-miss. If you have a feature that spawns water on the edges then there is a real possibility the fortifications will release a limitless water supply despite their location. I say test it and see.
