What can cause a dwarf to die. Instantly and without warning?

I just had a planter die.  The alerts I got were:
Thikut Kanolon, Planter cancels Dye Cloth:  Unconscious.
Thikut Kanolon, Planter has been struck down.

Nevermind that.  The sheriff killed him, probably for a missed mandate, but the only mandate I saw was an export ban. =/  Oh well.  Replacing the sheriff with an invalid.

Not entirely accurate. If you somehow get one in adventure mode, you can throw it and explode people into gore.

Can purring maggots cause them to die instantly and without warning if you mod the raws to set up a thermonuclear maggot?

They don't even appear until you trap them, and I've tried to get normal vermin to explode before with no success, so I'd say no.

On topic, longnose gar or pike. I've had dwarves insta-gibbed by those fishy bastards just by wandering too close to a pond.

The Early Winter Freeze and the Late Winter Thaw take many brave aquifer breaking miners from my forts, instantly and without warning.

I've always wished I could extract my frozen aquifer-nauts, still encased in ice mind you, and make an ice statue garden out of them.  Or perhaps sell them to the elves.
