Magma warms stone wealls above?
« on: June 21, 2009, 04:18:00 pm »

Is this supposed to happen? I mined out a "room" to build Magma Forges over, sealed it off, and channeled into the magma to fill it up. No problem so far.

But when I am trying to mine ABOVE said magma room, all the walls above it are showing up as warm and the dorfs keep canceling. When I tell them to do it anyways, no magma comes out to kill them of course.

What is up? I've never had this happen before.

i'm assuming its the same thing as water, water makes soil or stone muddy or damp, this means you have to constantly tell your dwarves to dig a certain rock

its annoying, but just keep telling them to do it, they'll get it done

Water makes the tiles ABOVE it damp? Huh, never noticed that.

3 dimensions.

The game isn't asking if you're planning on digging DOWN, it's only letting you know that it could be a problem.  Same with water (only water's more dangerous re digging down).

A down stair pierces the floor, even if it doesn't allow pathing for a dorf - water (and the rare pressurized magma) can still flow up.  So, the warning.

No jobs canceled for revealed tiles, only when you order tiles dug that are not yet revealed.  There are some utilities ("Dig Anywhere"? something like that) that work around this.

Good a time as any to point out that digging under anything is fine, except aquifers. Digging under aquifers is bad.

The only times it's dangerous to mane out damp/warm stone is when you don't know what's on the other side. If you know there's magma underneath/above the stone, there's no real worry.

It's a little bit like minesweeper.  More than once, I've hit we stone and ordered the little guy to power through it, having spotted water above, only to realize that the tile in question is bounded by water on more than one side.  Whups. Time to build some doors and walls.

Also, don't put up or up/down stairs underneath water (or magma or an aquifer).  I once almost lost an entire fortress - and turned half the map into a lake - that way.
