The Dumbest Generation
« on: June 21, 2009, 01:09:52 pm »

I've been having a question that's been biting my leg for the longest time.  I'm sure this deserves a new topic and so it has.  I just want to have your thoughts of what you think this new digital stuff is going to do to our newest generation, including me.

Some of us have very grim thoughts:  http://www.dumbestgeneration.com/home.html

And I can't find any good ones...

It may be pretty funny for someone to be posting about this ON THE INTERNET when that create--argg, nevermind.  Anyway, this does have it's growing concerns and having public opinions always helps, right?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ok, as for me I DO think that SOME people are becoming meat bags for what they do with the internet.  You can seriously learn more from staring at a wall then do what they do, ha.  However!  There will always be those that use the internet for knowledge and not just for pointless chitter chatter.  The book I linked too above has 8 reason why this generation is dumber and I'll just list them for you:

1. They make excellent "Jaywalking'' targets

2. They don't read books -- and don't want to, either

3. They can't spell

4. They get ridiculed for original thought, good writing

5. Grand Theft Auto IV, etc.

6. They don't store the information

7. Because their teachers don't tell them so

8. Because they're young

Here's the link if you want the whole details:  http://www.boston.com/lifestyle/gallery/dumbestgeneration/

Now that I got the ball rolling I would like some NICE disussion of the matter, I want this to be sortof serious, I really want to know what you think and if you can any information you can lead it would be most greatful.  Enough chitter chatter (ha!) let the comments BEGIN.

Every generation is like that. You should've seen me when I was 12.

Quote
Why Muz thinks his father's generation were more stupid:

1. They injure themselves on skateboards for no reason

2. They don't read books -- and don't want to, either

3. They think that it's cool to start gangs and say things like "word to yo mutha"

4. They get ridiculed for original thought, good writing

5. Black Sabbath, Marilyn Manson, etc

6. They don't store the information

7. Because their teachers punish them excessively for little things that don't matter

8. Because they're young

That said, I've noticed an incredible amount of stupidity in this one. It's creepy. My little brother has cheated on like 8 of his girlfriends and most of his girlfriends are over 18. WTF?

5. Grand Theft Auto IV, etc.

It's true, Vice City was infinitely better.  This generation has no taste.

That's hilarious Footchief.

I want to get that book just to read it now.  The guy who wrote it is some English Professor in Atlantic or something.  Let's call him Philly for good measures.

Here's my reasons why this generation(my own, I guess. I'm 18 :( ) is worse than others. Please don't be offended.

1. Twilight. Just...Twilight...
2. The internet
3. Life isn't structured enough for them beyond school.
4. We listen to Kanye West/50cent/Lady Gaga crap instead of Wu-Tang Clan/Biggie Smalls/State Radio
5. Extension to #4 and #1. Most media sucks nowadays. Books, movies, music, tv shows, games, they're all terrible. I mean, previous generations had Kurt Vonnegut writing books! We get... J.K. Rowling and Stephanie Meyer.
6. Extension to #6. Lack of good role models in the media. No more Captain Amazo to look up to, just Tommy Vercetti and Edward Cullen.
7. Don't seem to do enough hard work. Most of the generation has this general attitude of "I don't need to do that. I won't do that"
8. For some reason, instead of strengthening and unifying a generation, or defining a generation, the War in Iraq has not effected us at all. Viet Nam had millions of teenagers protesting and working together towards a common goal, the World Wars had them fighting for the free world and supporting the troops. There has been no significant response to the War in Iraq. Everyone is just...uncaring about it.

Oh dear #8 got a little serious   :(

WOULD YOU FREAKIN' BELIEVE I'M THE ONLY ONE THAT SAYS THE PLEDGE IN MY CLASS.

Actually, you probably would.  My teacher kept freaking out about it saying that, "Our brothers fight for our freedom in America and this is how we repay them!?"  Don't worry though, WE WILL DO THIS DO THIS!!  NOTHING WILL STOP ME OR YOU!!!  RRRAGAGAGAGAGHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!

Why, that wasn't very serious, maybe.  Umm, yeah whatever.  Somebody else make a 8 list.

1. Children are too shallow
2. Most parents now can't properly raise a child
3. Schools don't force children to better themselves
4. Theres not enough pressure on kids to acheive something
5. Parents don't know how to stop children from being exposed to a media that is far too powerful
6. Kids are spoiled like hell
7. Like Chutney said: Very few role models, anywhere.
8. Because of #1&2, kids don't know how to act appropriate for their age and this leads to a bad and meaningless social life.

Holy crap, this too. When I was still in high school I would get so mad at people not saying the pledge. I would be fine if they were doing it because they didn't agree with America's policies or what it's doing in Iraq or whatever. if they had a REASON I would be okay. They didn't say the pledge because they didn't feel like it. Because they thought the pledge was dumb. They had NO REASON to not say the pledge. It was so annoying!

Not all people will relate to it, but the same happened at my school. My teacher and I were the only ones in my first hour class that said the Pledge, but beyond that, at a Catholic highschool, we were the only ones to pray the morning prayer.

They call you suck-ups or brown nosers or something, but I tell you what.  I was just doing what I was told was "right" when I was young(er).

They had NO REASON to not say the pledge. It was so annoying!

Going to argue with this. The Pledge of Allegiance to the United States is as follows:

"I pledge allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America, and to the Republic for which it stands, one Nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all."

Now, it might just be that you haven't given the Pledge a close look, but when you are saying that, you are stating the following:
1. You are swearing that you will serve the United States and the Americian Republic.
2. You are swearing that the republic you serve is a single nation, ie. not a confederation of indepentant states.
3. You are swearing that the republic you serve is "under God", for what that means.
4. You are swearing that the republic you serve cannot be divided and, implicitly, that you oppose secession.
5. You are swearing to uphold liberty and justice for absolutely everyone.

That's a really really really big commitment and it is absolutely retarded to demand that every student in every public school swear to this daily from the time that they start school and can't properly pronounce the word "indivisable" to the time they leave school and hopefully start college. Forcing children to recite this daily and then punishing them if they refuse to swear to it makes the Pledge 100% meaningless in a public school because in order for the Pledge to have any meaning at all you have to swear to it willingly, not after coercion and the implicit threat of public mockery if you feel you are unwilling or unable to swear to it. Having this as a requirement is degrading the value of the Pledge as an oath and undermines the concept of promises, duty and contracts in our children. It really is as dumb as everyone in your class says it is.

That would definitely be one of my reasons.  Pledges, flags and all that are unbearably cheesy.  But more importantly, they foster a quasi-religious mindset in which the state is assumed to be a good thing, a source of authority rather than a conduit.

1. They make excellent "Jaywalking'' targets-You only jaywalk when you don't see cars.

2. They don't read books -- and don't want to, either-I read all the time.

3. They can't spell-I can spell better than many adults, thank you very much.

4. They get ridiculed for original thought, good writing-True enough, but if you're smart, you don't care.

5. Grand Theft Auto IV, etc.-I don't game on games like that. GalCiv 2 FTW!

6. They don't store the information-I do.

7. Because their teachers don't tell them so-Yes, we do.

8. Because they're young-Duh.
