Midyear Massacre Madness - DF support encore
« on: June 21, 2009, 12:53:39 pm »

To celebrate my seventh complete fort annihilation by orc forces (orc mod ftl) and to show some dwarwen midyear massacre madness, I've launched a little support-DF campaign by encouraging everybody I know who is into DF to donate; those who aren't to try it out and donate if they like it.

Starting with myself I added 50% to my initial donation made last summer.

Reason: No other titles bought since last summer; none have caught my interest, sadly.

Also to me personally it is incredible important that Tarn's model works out; for him and us DF lovers as well as future indie game developers.

I encourage everyone to join in the madness if they feel like it.

ps:
I know a lot of people will meet the same arguments as I am having with friends, who thinks the game is stalled, too hard, too easy, etc, so I prepared a few truthful statements you can utilise:
- DF will feature unicorns in 3D you can ride sooner with your support (in 30-40 years - dont mention this part)
- DF will have huge 200k armies you can lay waste with sooner with your support (soon!)
- DF will be playable on Xbox and Playstation sooner with your support (50+ years)
- DF is implementing the newest pixel-shader technology and slow-mo deaths sooner with your support (a number of months)
- DF will be multiplayer sooner with your support (is already with zip 'n send, but soon soon says the moon)
etc etc

I'll donate upon release.  Not before.

That's cool Fieari. I guess you mean the next release or? Ie not ver 1.

If I still like the game and where it is going at the time, I think I will do the same. If I have money for it of course.

From what I recall of many of Toady's statements, you're rather wrong here.
- Graphics are likely to stay ASCII, because it allows you to imagine your own fort. Doing otherwise is an injustice to how open-ended DF is, the whole spirit of the game is to make a fantasy world the way you want to see it, not how some animator sees the drawings of a concept artist's vision of things.

- Df is likely to stay PC based because 1. You'd need to port it over which won't happen and 2. I doubt an X-box could handle more than a 4x4 embark site. You need mega-rigs right now to play a large fort, so the only way a console could handle it is one designed specifically for DF, which is unlikely.

- Multiplayer will not happen, ever. There is, quite simply, no machine ever that could handle several people playing DF on it at the same time.

Not to say you shouldn't donate, but you shouldn't promise things that won't happen. We already have Peter Molyneux for that.

Sonerohi I think the topic creator was making a joke there

Since none of those things will EVER happen in Dwarf Fortress.

Well, graphics are in the pipeline if I recall. As for a console designed specifically for DF... Hey... I'd buy it. :-)

Since I was half joking and half saying 30-50+ years in the future...  ;D

PCs and consoles as we know them today will probably be very different in that long, and the relationship or lack thereof between them most definately too.

Further everything in DFs future is not set in stone.

In any case the PS is a bad attempt at a joke.  :)

The rest I am serious about tho.

So true, Fable 2 was such a disappointment to me. :(

I wish I could find that video where he talks about Fable 2 and mention things like

"Being able to plant trees and see them grow and turn into forests over time" and "being able to found your own city and have later characters pass by statues of your original hero"

Watch, in one of the future DF relesses you'll be able to do all that.

We can already plant forests. Or at least, we can get the ground soaking wet and wait for them to grow.

Yea exactly, empty promises are a big silly part of gaming. Especially in MMOs, many of which never even got into alpha testing.

I find DF to be one of the only games that delivers and more.

Also, when the adventurer skill comes in, we could make a city by ourself!

And crafting our statues too...

The Adams brothers are actually bit like Peter Molyneux. Like if Molyneux actually delivered on his promises.
