Not to cause any panic, but, have you checked the raws recently? - all the evil (read:giant) chasm critters are benign!!   ;D :o

This being said, my last GB incident went like this:Bat flew past a dozen dwarves, not hurting or interrupting anyone, only when a stray war dog came along the bat attacked (and the dog? who first?) Right then my puny army of 4 arrived and, lets say, reluctantly, attacked too. It might be that the bat attacked a dwarf first but after that the marksdwarves a bit off attacked too at least.

Results: War dog dead, dwarves unharmed. Giant Bat roast. Sound beating for Mr.Mason who didn't build that wall in time.

Had a map where an open-air chasm was spawning Giant bats and Giant Cave swallows. And by using a chained horse and a LOT of cage traps, I had breeding populations.

I made an aviary for the birds, and a belfry for the bats before I got bored.

No you didn't, because it wasn't.

Creatures don't "spawn", only vermin spawn.  The chasm had those creatures in it, and they decided to come out and visit your fortress.

Right. That.

But they were spawning of their own accord at a ferocious rate.

Halp! The Giant Bat spawned my dwarf into shreds!  Then his buddies spawned an entire caravan!  I have to get my armorsmith to spawn some better armor so I can spawn this threat!

My, you do bristle with curmudgeonite.
I fixed your quote, as well. :)

It's a tough crowd, but a friendly crowd.

(If it weren't, you'd be totally spawned!;D

Now, I got attacked by 20 goblins and none of my marksdorfs are bothering to keep ammunition on them; I read on the wiki that they're supposed to keep a stack in their hand and a stack in their quiver. One training, one combat.

Does Copper count as a training material? Because I have 300 rounds of the stuff [none forbidden] and they still only use their quiver full of bone bolts.

And is there a way to force them to refill the quiver? Half my military only had a single bolt in their quiver, probably from me accidentally reclaiming stray ammunition.

AFAIK, Dwarves only haul a second stack of training bolts when enroute to the range to, well, train.

The solution to running out of ammo is to place small metal-only(ie, The Good Stuff - not necessary, just my preference) ammo stockpiles set to take from the main, near where you expect your marksdwarves to fight from, so they only have to run to the nearest branch armoury rather than humping it all the way back to the central stockpile.

Of course, I also cross-train my marksdwarves as wrestlers, armour users, and hammerdwarves, just have to be careful not to over-train so you can switch them back and still have them shoot.
