Challenge Idea (and possible community/something game)
« on: June 21, 2009, 12:59:20 am »

I have started alone.

It doesn't sound super-hard, but I sounds fun to me. Possibly "Fun".
Here's the Challenge Rules:

Location:
whereever, but prefferably somewhere with little/no fresh water

Embark:
 7 peasants
 1 pick
 1 pig tail
0-1 cat (zero or one. NOT 2 or more)
 0-1 dog (see above)

Additional:
The ONLY PLANT YOU CAN GROW IS PIG TAILS. (This is the core of the challenge, imo.)
You can buy whatever you want from the traders, but all seeds other than pig tail seeds MUST BE COOKED ASAP.
Cooking booze is allowed, but is looked upon like this:  > : (. (EDIT: actually this is the only way to get something eatable from pig tails, oops)
(Optional) After a year or two (once you have a cloth industry running), you can plant and mill Dimple Cups for dye.
(Optional) Low population cap, ~20. I just like low pop. forts. Easier to manage imo.

I haven't tried it myself yet, but I do plan to sometime this next week. I duno if it's been done, but I've never heard of it before.

I was thinking it could be a succession or community fort. Or perhaps several players start at the same time (optionally in the same world/embark area) and we all chronicle our successes/failures.

Thoughts? Opinion of the challenge? Ideas for an in-universe reason 7 dwarven peasants are stuck in the middle of nowhere with only a pick and a single seed? Also help decide if we should do it succession, community, multi-chronicle, or something else.

I intend to try it and post about my success/Fun one way or the other.

I'm failing to see what prevents you from starving to death a few in-game months after embarking.

You'd have to quickly dig out a farm and plant the seed.

Pig tails can be grown in spring, right? I haven't actually checked.

oops... i gues you'd have to cook the booze, wouldn't you? dang, that's what i get for posting so late at night...

EDIT: okay... pig tails are summer and autumn only...

If you allow picking and eating of berries, you could get through the spring and summer with little difficulty, plus all the berry seeds to cook with.

You could always slaughter the cat and dog.

Actualy, this sounds interesting, having to deal with being able to grow food for only half a year.

Though there should be a bit more clarity on other sources of food, I could for example just get all food from hunting and foraging.

well... personally, i've never done much hunting or foraging... neither is as reliable as farming afaik.

i was thinking (admittedly, i forgot to mention it in the OP) of a fort focused on pig tails and making cloth... as in only cloth.

... hmm i guess it'd be a bit like an elf-fort...

few herbalists can easily feed 20 dwarves... there are eaten by cougars time to time, but it is good enough before you make yourself catsplosion type food source

On the topic of a fort making cloth and only cloth, that may actually have it's uses down the line, when fortresses can kind of 'continue on' after you retire it, and become part of the civilization. Then importing masterful cloth from that fort to a new one could have benefits.

My basic plan would be as follows: 1 dwarf becomes carpenter/mason. He tears down the wagon and makes 3 barrels then makes a shitload of tables, thrones and doors out of stone. 2 dwarves fish, 1 dwarf cleans fish. 2 dwarves pick/brew* berries and take care of the seed, 1 dwarf mines and carves turtle parts into bolts, xbows and crafts.

*This is assuming you're allowed to brew berries. If you aren't, they can just drink water untill you brew some ale.

I'm planning on attempting this. I've installed the orc mod, so I'm planning on keeping the axe and anvil. I also won't be chronicling my exploits.

Anyone interested in joining in? I plan on starting around 9:00 ('bout an hour and a half from now) if not.

EDIT: so, i lied. it's 10:30 and i'm just now gening the world.

I'll just post the log here if no-one minds.

never mind. i'll just play by myself. not in the mood to be keeping a log or making screenshots.

so, i played for a while last night. despite the unexplainable foul mood i was in.

I didn't realize it at embark, but i got just a tiny bit of some evil/savage biome. not sure what it is, but it spawned a werewolf and a pair of ogres... against 7 peasants... with no weapons/armor/etc...

I've got one hungry, thirsty, unhappy dwarf left, and very little mining done. Not that i need a lot of space for a single dwarf...

I already play this challenge type!

I've currently got a fort with over fifty dwarves in it built on an Evil Untamed Wilds Taiga.

My rules are as follows:
Embark with seven dwarves, no skills, no equipment but a single pick.
Cannot construct any barrels except from the first three pieces of wood from the wagon. Must trade them when the caravan arrives. Can only use lowest quality imported tower cap barrels after this.
Cannot create bags. Can only import giant cave spider silk bags.
Can only construct beds from tower cap wood.
Cannot use constructions.
Cannot dig stairs, only ramps.
No underground areas larger than 7x7 (old school).
No hunting.
No trade with elves (stealing okay).
All underground areas smoothed, but never engraved.
No trade agreements.

To date I've had zero fatalities, and I've dealt with three skeletal giant eagles, one of which was named. I only have a 10 square outdoor farm that grows whip vines year round. I don't use underground farms or wells yet, but that's in the works for later. Considering the map's frozen all year except fifteen days in summer, it means my water has to come from brewing. Also note that I have no trade with humans either, so everything I import is either stolen from the elves or imported from the mountainhomes. Plant gathering works well in a pinch if I'm desperate for a boost to the food stocks.
