This fortress is less than three years old and has already been eaten by the lag monster.  Molasses-slow gameplay and (more seriously) interface jerkyness have just killed off the fun for me.  This will be my last serious DF fort until either this game gets some optimizations or I get a better computer.

I'd like to see how it fares on other peoples' machines.  Please post at least the following information:

Game version:  40d (also tested in 40d11)

Machine:  Pentium IV CPU 2.20 GHz, 1 GB RAM; READEON 8500 w/ 64MB RAM; Win XP (SP#2)

Results:  25-30 FPS in 40d(0), ~25 FPS in 40d11.
Comments:  Forbidding or hiding the rocks didn't work.

Installation:
1. Make a backup of your DF directory.  Your DF version must (probably) be 40d or newer.
2. Put game in save folder.
3. Replace init.txt with enclosed file.
4. Delete the contents of your \data\objects folder.
5. Delete your \raw\objects folder.  Put "objects" folder in the raw directory.  Don't just overwrite the files because that might not work correctly and may yield inconsistent results.
6. (optional, but init.txt asks for it) Put "maydaycustom.bmp" into \data\art folder.
7. Play.

If you want to reduce some lag, try atom smashing all of those rocks.  Seriously.

Can't you just include the whole game download? I don't want to risk screwing up my own save, and the whole game isn't big enough to take any significant time downloading for those of us with broadband.

Honestly, it's so easy to follow the install directions I gave that it wouldn't be worth the bandwidth to provide an entire game setup.  I performed them myself on a clean d40 install and it took me only a couple of minutes.

Doesn't look too bad. Then again, my machine has pretty good specs (as far as I know, for a home PC).

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Think it'll handle it? I'll take on the challenge. It could be a lack of RAM, or a powerful enough processor, if anything.

Then again, You didn't happen to have a ton of dwarves mass-dumping a ton of stone, have you? That usually does something in. I almost did that with a past fort. Took about half an hour to clean up a large 2-story dining room with over 50 guys doing it.

EDIT:
Okay, I've played for a bit. Got a steady 30-40 FPS for a short while, then it jumps back to 60-70 FPS (Mostly-steady 70FPS) once in awhile. I didn't touch a thing, aside from checking mass-dump and whatnot. Even with miasma and plenty of cats.

Aside from designations and such (A rather small mass-dump), I see no problem. Plus, according to my machine, it's plenty small of a map. Check out my megaproject. Now that, with enough units and tasks working on it, that stretches my machine's muscles.

Get a better processor or more RAM is my solution.

NOTE:
Dang, those suckers move fast when it's stabilized.

I think i partially found your problem: it's the mass "mine ramp" designation, don't ask me why it is like this, but i get ~90fps with it and 400-500fps when i changed the designation it to "mine" or "up stairway" (similar job, same number of iddlers).
Also after removing some ramps fps went to 500-600, so it's propably a pathfinding problem.

Solution:  No mass crave ramp designations , and genereally less ramps. gl!  ;)

my machine specs: Core2Duo E7200 OC'd to 3,7 GHz, win XP(SP3), GF8600GT, 2Gb ram.
I use DF_40d11 with [PRINT_MODE:FRAME_BUFFER] and [SINGLE_BUFFER:NO]

Oh, and Hi all ! (my first post)

i reckon 3.1 ghz is the minimum, i've tested the game on 3.1, 2.5 and a 8 CPU server and found it ran best on my pentium4 3.1ghz processor, lags on anything less.

And i think neatness help a bit. Also i don't think the custom graphics help either.

What is the the large snakey river-like path on one of the upper levels?

Seriously though, getting rid of those stones would definetly help. I wouldn't be surprised if your stocks screen choked and died when it tries to display the number of all that rock.

Only when trying to view the stones in particular on the stocks screen. Skipping over that entry results in no lag (from that, at least).

actually it is stable with custom ~40$ air cooler (tested with prime95), i got it to run @ 4,0 Ghz but it wasnt stable under 100% load at both cores.

on topic: removing the stones would definitely help , also you could try using traffic areas (high inside fort and common areas), but it usually helps more on larger maps.

You call 25 FPS slow??

I never worry about lag until FPS gets into the single digits.

I became OCD about stone management after my last fort was hard crashing with 190k stone.

I never let it top 2000 and even then I only get around 35 FPS while everyone is idling and around 15-20 if there's a lot of tasks to be done.

Specs:
Core 2 Quad Q9550 @ 2.83 GHZ
8 Gigs RAM
9800 GX2

It doesn't matter what machine you have, once you get enough dwarves you're going to be sitting at around 20 FPS or less.

With [SLOW_LEARNER], dwarves probably don't sit around and talk anymore. They just stand in the same corner altogether, staring at each other, sticking their bearded lips out trying to make sounds. And giggling when someone actually says a whole word.
