25?
You call THAT low FPS?
Try six. On a 64-bit dual-core. No shortage of RAM.

Large map, lots of crap, lots of fluids.

Elves do it in trees. Humans do it in wooden structures. Dwarves? Dwarves do it underground. With magma.

I think i partially found your problem: it's the mass "mine ramp" designation, don't ask me why it is like this, but i get ~90fps with it and 400-500fps when i changed the designation it to "mine" or "up stairway" (similar job, same number of iddlers).
Also after removing some ramps fps went to 500-600, so it's propably a pathfinding problem.

Solution:  No mass crave ramp designations , and genereally less ramps. gl!  ;)

my machine specs: Core2Duo E7200 OC'd to 3,7 GHz, win XP(SP3), GF8600GT, 2Gb ram.
I use DF_40d11 with [PRINT_MODE:FRAME_BUFFER] and [SINGLE_BUFFER:NO]

Oh, and Hi all ! (my first post)

Do people find in general that mass-designation causes FPS problems?  I didn't think so, until just today when I marked out a just-mined empty 40x100 space for smoothing in my current fort, and my FPS tanked from 18 to 6.   Undesignating it brought my FPS back up again, and smoothing it in 20x40 strips hasn't been a problem.

Mass designating anything kills my FPS.

You've got several acres of mass-designated ramp.  As long as it's there, every Dig Ramp job is trying to figure out the best way to path over and around the ramps that have already been dug. It's a bloody nightmare.  Try ramp designating in 11x11 chunks, or 33x11 strips.

I always get slow down when my miners are digging mass ramp designations. My first guess is that it has something to do with the fact that when you dig out a ramp at a location that is supporting a number of ramps the program has to not only set that location as a ramp, but also remove the ramps that had been previously supported by that location. You wouldn't notice it usually, but when it's happening constantly I bet that's when you start to notice the lag. Try watching the miners go to work, there will be a noticeable lag each time the miner digs a new ramp. At least that's what happens in my games.

It helps that i don't do a massive amount of jobs at once. My fortresses are usually slowly built and planned.

Always 3-15 FPS on my forts when something is in progress. I'm so used to that kind of thing it doesn't even cause rage.

It's definitely the mass designation. After I cut down on that I was hovering at about 100fps while looking at a part of the fortress with no movement (that was after the three wood jobs got cancelled, so there was very little else going on). Then I redesignated the huge chunk that was left, and the framerate dropped to about 20.

(You do know about those dwarves behind the floodgates on level 146? They've been there for a while...)

I am trying to make chickens lay bees as eggs. So far it only produces a single "Tame Small Creature" when a hen lays bees.
Honestly at the time, I didn't see what could go wrong with crowding 80 military Dwarves into a small room with a necromancer for the purpose of making bacon.

"Results:  25-30 FPS in 40d(0), ~25 FPS in 40d11."

...... if you think that is bad.... I played DF at 5FPS for over a month.  I finally fixed the problem after that month, I had forgotten to install my video drivers after reformatting my harddrive lol.  So now even 15fps makes me happy(5-10 does not bother me either), but i get anywhere from 15-30 depending on the number of tasks at any given time.
