strange forbidding behavior
« on: June 20, 2009, 11:11:34 am »

I'm trying to get all my miners to legendary, so whenever I see another one of them flashing I do what seems obvious, namely disable his mining labor.

What's strange is that I've seen them drop their picks, instead of taking them to the weapon stockpile, and even forbid them.

What could causing them to do something that daft?

whenever you disable the mining or woodcutter labor from a dwarf it immidiately drops his pick or axe and goes and does something else. I have never seen it forbidden, so I don't know about that.

I think that the reason they just drop it is because the pick is required and somehow tied to the mining action, so if they can't mine they don't need a pick, and same for the woodcutting and axe. Also, dwarves aren't smart enough to take stuff to tstockpiles when they're done with them.

This seems to be as good a time any to ask what is means when your dwarves flash?

The dropping part isn't what irritates me, it's the forbidding part, obviously.

Regarding fprime's question: your dwarf's icon and their name in the unit menu flashes after they've achieved legendary rank in one skill.

The cats don't take their kills to the stockpiles; they take them to their owners.

I think the forbidding has something to do with combat; at least, I've noticed my miners carrying around (and using) forbidden picks, and they oftentimes end up as ad-hoc military in the early days of the fortress. They certainly aren't forbidding the picks at the time they drop them.

<nods>

One or more - no diff in the flashing.

What's strange is that I've seen them drop their picks, instead of taking them to the weapon stockpile, and even forbid them.

Never seen the forbid behaviour, but same w/ picks or axes if the wood-cutting labor is turned off.

Sometimes they'll carry them around - I think the difference is that if they are currently mining a tile (or cutting a tree), and the labor is turned off, they'll drop, but if they have no current job they'll still carry them around.

(You sure the pick isn't surrounded by {brackets}, and not (parentheses)?  Nearly impossible to tell the diff visually in the DF font, and the former just means you didn't manufacture it, but either traded for it or brought it with on embark.  Use <d, b, c> to see what's forbidden and to reclaim anything you desire - or <k> over a tile with item(s), then pick and choose.)

You have that backwards, actually. Parentheses mean it's foreign goods, and curly braces mean it's forbidden.

My picks were both in parentheses and the {} things.

Also, now I've noticed something even weirder, and what was mentioned by Albedo in this thread, namely that a miner was carrying a forbidden pick around.

Well, fuck it. It may be a weird occurrence, but at least it didn't break anything, since the forbidden picks still seemed to go on being used.

It seems that it's "I had it first!" - they won't pick up a forbidden object, but if they're already carrying it, it's their's.

I suspect it's an autoforbid order. I don't remember exactly which, but I know that your weapon gets forbidden sometimes if it gets enemy blood on it, e'en if it doesn't get dropped. (I suspect these are stuck-in cases, where dorf wins- the enemy dies and 'drops' the stuckin).

As for dropping the picks, setting mining or woodcutting will set pick (uses mining skill!) or axe weaponpref, and clearing it...clears that, as well, 99% sure.

I had invasions temporarily disabled, but now that I think of it, the forbidden picks might have had some macaque blood on them. If I understood you correctly, you meant that that alone wouldn't be enough to get them auto-forbidden, and that they must have been stuck-ins? Because that's something I can rule out, especially since one of the forbidden picks was actually being carried around like that.

Also, I didn't switch none of my miners to wood cutting, they were either mining or doing jobs that didn't require a weapon.

I'm just guessing with the stuckins.

But I do see a lot of forbidden (yet carried, used) weapons(picks usually for me) happening with bloodsmears(fire imp goo), when they never appear to leave dwarven hands. They'll cheerfully still use the things, for some reason, so you have to pay attention. This doesn't happen if you clear all the autoforbids (iirc)
