I recall playing Stars! for may weeks, it was good back then.

Shades, we can set turn time to 24 or 48 hours. And you're not the only one that sucks at it

48 hours sounds best to me, although it's gonna be a long slow start :)

Yep, first ten turns are mostly quite the same, mines, factories, more mines and factories, new planet, starting with mines and factories...

If you download the 2.6 .exe from the versions page ( http://wiki.gible.net/index.php/Patches_and_versions ) you can just run it  in windows.

So, my copy of it will run under windows (XP), but only if I start it early (since otherwise it's program number is out of the range that it will believe). I've also had some luck running it in Ubuntu in WINE.

and EagleV, I'd be up for it (especially with 48h turns), though I'll admit to having never played a multiplayer game outside of the few people I introduced it to in college.

Same here :)

Also, if no-one else wants to play, I guess we can start. Do you both have version 2.6 or 2.7?

hmm if it doesn't run on 64bit windows I might have problems too. I'll have to install it when I am home. failing that I'll try wine under ubuntu (which means I could play at work too :))

2.70i. I'd make a separate thread for it (perhaps in FG&RP) and start a signup list there, you're likely to gather more people that way.

Also, X2yzh9, I'll see if I can get it running under dosbox.
It's fairly sure it's a windows 16-bit executable. I'd go the WINE route, if possible.

well, i don't know of any wine applications that would run under windows, and i would need a detailed guide if i was to create a VM, maybe not so detailed, but a VM to get it under linux, it's a Windows 3.1 application, actually, theyre IRC told me. hehe.

Yeah, but it's it's 16-bitness that is preventing it from working in 64-bit windows.
as for WINE, that's a Linux-based windows emulator, so you'd need a machine with linux installed on it to use it. If you're stuck on 64-bit windows, I'd strongly suggest using VirtualBox to get a virtual machine with either windows or linus installed on it, as a way of getting past that.

I've got that game... great fun :D

Wormhole race is the most fun once you get the unlimited mass/range stargate, especially if you get the ship-portable gate from the traders; hello impossible to track, teleporting uber fleets!

Incidentally, I think I may have a serial code... there's an *ancient* sticker on the whiteboard of the physics common room that has the words stars activation code, and a string of alphanumerics. I'll post it here when I get into uni.

The issue is that everyone playing in the game needs to have a different activation code, so a single one wouldn't help for a Bay12 game. Much better to get one from the official place.
