Couldn't they be persuaded to work together? (Magma...?)

I liked this game. Never bought it though, just played the demo. Couldn't find it in stores. I wonder if I could get it somewhere.

Best bet would probably be to obtain the graphics from the publisher or whoever holds the rights to them now.
I've found a discussion dating from 2005 discussing just that: http://groups.google.com/group/rec.games.computer.stars/browse_thread/thread/21bdd60ed8706438/08b6c0e6e71f2c93

Edit: God damnit! My CD has vanished ??? this is rather anoying....

Does anyone here know if it's still possible to get a serial for the most recent version of the game at all, anymore? All the information I can find on such things is almost or more than two years old.

edit:
That is to say, they literally ran out of activation codes, and the person that was supposedly handing them out for donations of six dollars or something, was more than two years ago.

Said person, Ron, is still handing them out from a code generator, with the permission of the authors. link

This sounds like Ascendency (another old dos game)

It's totally not like it, apart from being in the same genre(4x). Also, it's not a dos game.

Stars is in fact awesome, even if some bits of it are spread-sheety and complex. I suspect the people claiming that you need a math pHD to understand it are taking it too seriously, since the difference beyond "yes, I can probably intercept that fleet" and "no, I probably can't" are normally trivial.

I've also found that being able to mount the hosting server's turn folder as a network drive makes it much easier to conduct multiplayer, since then there isn't any manual copying of save files around. I've got some bash scripts to automate backup + generation of turns somewhere, if we wanted to try to get a b12 game up and running or something like that.

A b12 game sounds interesting.

Sounds like a simpler Space Empires V.  Oh Space Empires V, how I wish you weren't so unwieldy in your glorious bulkyness.

I have the SE 4 & SE 5 compilation disc, but SE 5 doesn't run...SE 4 is pretty good in my opinion, though. I might try out Stars! later.

It's quite different in many little aspects, eg. Stars lets you colonize solar systems where SEV uses planets, Stars makes you travel all the way with occasionally a wormhole, while SEV uses wormholes in every system, etc. I'm used to Stars, so I don't know which is the best untill I get equally used to SEV.

Been a long long time since I played stars! but I still have the cd so if there was a bay12 game I'd be happy to join in (depending on work schedule) and lose due to sucking at the game somewhat.

For those interested, I will start a game and see how many are interested.

Shades, we can set turn time to 24 or 48 hours. And you're not the only one that sucks at it

Rysith, how 'bout you?
