For the love of god Montresor!
« on: June 19, 2009, 08:06:26 pm »

So I had a recent immigrant metalsmith go into a mood. I hadn't gotten my metalworks up and running, but did have an anvil. So I went ahead and built the workshop. Not wanting him to slaughter everyone should he fall on the berserk side of insanity, I walled him in.

His new name? Fortunato.

What do you do with your dwarves who you know will end up insane? Seal them in as above? Stand guards outside the room? Set cage traps and keep them for later amusement? Flood the room with water? Magma?

Give your ideas. The more elaborate and evil the better. =)

Playing a cheesemaker in an average Fortress 'round here would be. Freaking. Terrifying.

Military dorfs are the busiest if their partner is also in the military, Military children are my forts future, also its hilariously tragic when a mother carrying her child into battle gets hit, and the baby dies....
I fixed that up for you.

This has additional awesomeness potential as a way for offing nobles:
  • place a booze stockpile in an alcove
  • wait until the noble goes there to drink
  • take away the rest of the booze and wall them up
  • for bonus points, toss in a !!pig tail sock!! to kill them faster
  • for additional bonus points, change 'dwarven wine' to 'Amontillado' and 'barrel' to 'cask' in the raws.

As far as how to kill berserkers: I haven't actually had one yet, but epic idea:
Build a workshop suspended over a pit/chasm, attached by a bridge/support/something destructible. Wall off the rest of the fortress so that this building is the only one accessible to the future berserker. When they snap, they destroy the bridge/support and solve the problem on their own. Magma could also work as a destination.

I either assign a few war dogs or simply lock the door. Depends on whether I think there's a chance the mood will succeed or not.

I assign war dogs.  Although after they had ripped their beserk master to shreds several of my war dogs continued to hang around the glassmaker's furnace for... well, forever.

funny how few people consider just giving the guy the stuff he wants and let him make an artifact  :P

anyhow, I usualy just station a bunch of soldier near them if they go asking for things I dont have. Having them rampage around is actualy kinda funny, but they allways have to kill one the few dwarfs that are actualy usefull, rather then the dozens of soap/cheese/lye/potask makers.

I just give them what they want no matter what, managed to just about get the last of the stuff for a mood a few days ago, i reckon he had a few days left before he exploded. I guess you could rig it so that they are put in a cage then released onto a goblin raiding party.

Well, sometimes you don't want that useless woodcrafter or you are trying to stem immigration early on..... or you just want to off some useless pheasant.

If you've modded in pheasants, they should be butcherable.

Hehe, sorry.

Anyway, it's not always possible to fufil a mood - eg glassmaker on sandless map.

Yes. For the love of God.

Anyways, I usually try to get the dwarves what they want. If not, war dogs.
