Lost another liaison
« on: June 18, 2009, 09:35:56 pm »

My human liaison died on my last map, just keeled over without a scratch. I assumed it was old age (read somewhere that can happen) and let it drop. Recently started a new map and I lost the liaison again, this time he went berserk right as he stepped on a cage trap. I read on the wiki that they go insane immediately if they get caged, but all I can figure is he fell asleep on the trap since I had already hollowed out the entrance, ruling out a cave in. Is it possible he genuinely went mad from being inside my fortress or did I do something wrong?

Also, while we're on the subject, my new map has an exposed magma pipe. I've already had to deal with one brushfire, will walls or pits stop fire spreading or do I have to hunt the imps to extinction? I worry about the imps lighting my map on fire when they engage my marksdwarves, I don't want to lose my breeding stock of animals again.

Walls or pits will stop the fire spreading.

Hell, I've heard that a few rows of stockpile buggedly stop fire from spreading, sometimes.

regardless, the slime shooter will be completed, come hell or high water, which are both entirely plausible setbacks at this point.

Not sure about the liason, do you have a drawbridge entrance or something? I hear that closing off the only way of escape drives a liason crazy if they are trying to leave.

As for your fire problems, a one tile road, some channeling, or even elevation will stop a fire.

I dont' think you did anything wrong.

You DO sound cursed, though, maybe you upset a forturne teller? You haven't ruined any lives have you? The last guy it happened with got a hairy wife, and a rubbery, streatchy son.

And walls will work against a forest fire, if you're afraid of your animals getting burned, you can always keep them underground. PIts will stop them as well, and would be easier to make.  the best remedy is to stay away from it.

Guess I'll just have to put up with shipments of random stuff from the humans, they still mostly bring good stuff even without help. I still have the guy caged, wonder if there's a way to mod it so dwarves sometimes like to see caged humans ;D . I've added him to my zoo anyways, worth a good laugh (not like I can return the guy anyways... unless I wanted to sell him back to the caravan next year).

I still can't figure out what happened though, he was on his way out after the meeting, which took place right after the human caravan left, so it shouldn't have been time based. All I can figure is he took a nap on the cage and got trapped, which triggered a berserk message. I thought liaison's didn't sleep though.

Edit: while I don't know if fire can jump z-levels on cliffs, I've seen it jump down a hill. Almost killed my dwarves.

CONFIRMED.

I once walled in my fort to keep wildfires out.  The human liason promptly went berserk and murdered everyone in the whole fort.  It was hilarious.

95% sure my fortress had a viable path out, as the trade caravans had just left and I hadn't constructed any anti-fire defenses. All I can figure is it's a bug, kind of annoying.

The human liaison was most likely injured from world gen and was unfortunate enough to pass out on a cage trap. diplomats that are caught in a cage trap immediately go insane/berserk/melancholy.

IIRC stockpiles only stop fire spreading through the associated dwarf trampling killing the grass. Freshly-placed stockpiles won't stop fire spreading, whereas a dirt road or well-walked stockpile will. Walls or pits are a more permanent method though.
