Various Questions of a New person
« on: June 17, 2009, 11:44:56 am »

So hi. I'm new to the whole game. I haven't actually started playing yet, but i'm fixing my computer so that i will be able to. I have also read about the game extensively, so i know at least the basics.

So, my first question is for channeling. Say i was going to channel above a tunnel ment for water/magma (but it isn't full yet). The bit i'm going to channel is going to release the fluid. If i channel, wouldn't the water go up to the place where my dwarf is channeling? (not magma though i think). And wouldn't the dwarf fall through the channeled hole? From what i've read elsewhere, neither should happen.

My next question is about graphics (this might need to go in the modding forum). I read on the wiki that you just save the tileset, then convert it to bmp using MS paint. Now, i don't think i have MS paint, so is there another way to convert the file? Or another way to get the tilesets in?

Well, i thought i had a third question, but i can't remember it now.

A dwarf will channel a tile next to him, he will not stand on it unless there is not other place to stand(happens sometimes when you dig everything around him out). Water will only flow out of a channel if pressured. Like this:

Code: [Select]
WW|
|W|overflow
|WWWWW|

Water can only flow over the edge when it's source is higher, it's pushing it upwards.

If you are channeling in a single line, they won't fall in.

As for the water itself, that depends on whether the water is pressurized I think, also, if the source is several z-levels above, it will come through. However, if it is a closed pool, it should be fine.

As for the graphics sets, most of them you can just download. Check out the wiki for tilesets, the Mayday graphics set is one of the more popular if not the most popular graphics set.

A CHALLENGER APPROACHES!!!

Welcome to the forums!

A great wiki article on channeling/digging/stairs:
http://www.dwarffortresswiki.net/index.php/Dig

Graphics: I strongly urge you to give the ASCII a shot for like a week, and if you still just hate it, come back and get a graphics pack.
By the way, if you use a windows operating system, you have MS paint. If you have XP, go to start -> all programs -> accessories -> paint.

You can do in Vista if you set some option or other to classic, can't remember what one.

You can still do it in Vista, I just don't know the exact path to follow. I think you just click start and search in the big list of programs that pops up.

If you're on Windows just go to start-run... then type mspaint in the box and press OK. If you're on Vista skip the 'run' part and just type it right into the start menu.

In Vista, it's under start -> all programs -> accessories -> paint, same as Windows XP.

Okay, I just dowloaded the game and been playing for a few hours. Let me just say, this game is awesome. Also, i really suck at it ::). It took me ages just to figure out how to dig! I also later found out i took a stonecrafter with me instead of the mason i needed.

One of my dwarfs was attacked by an Olmman, but it left him alone after a few bites so he survived. Another olmman did kill two of my dogs though. How am i supposed to get my dwarfs to attack stuff/defend themselves?

How do I make a barracks? I know i'm supposed to get a bed into a room and designate it from there, but how am i supposed to move a bed from my furniture stockpile into a room so i can do that? (this should also apply to other types of rooms i assume)

When I tried to make a mason's workshop it wouldn't be built. I'm guessing this is because i don't have a mason. I checked on the wiki and it said i needed a block to make it. is that just a suggestion or do i actually need a block, stone and wood to make a workshop?

So yah, i can't think of any more questions now. I'll probabley have some later though.

@ barracks: when you have a weapon rack you designate your barracks from there.

@ olmman problem: I don't really know how strong those guys are but you may succeed by drafting all your dwarfs in the millitary and kill those buggers. On the other hand - if you get your stuff underground fast with only one entrance the olmman propably wont attack you there.

@ mason: you need one dwarf with the masonry profession enabled. You can do this even for none masons after selecting a dwarf with 'v' then pressing 'p' and 'l' if I remember correctly. As building material you can use any rock your miners broke out of the mountain.

good luck with your fortress and have some fun with the olman  ;)

0. Don't worry, Losing is fun :) The first week I played DF I had started around 10 different forts... The best tip you'll ever receive is: Check the wiki. Its a lifesaver.

1. To attack stuff, you'll need a military. You can click 'm' and activate them so they'll become soldiers. You can stack them into squads, and choose weapons or armor.

2. A barracks is simply a bedroom with an extra option. To set down a bed simply _b_ uild it, wait until its hauled there, and then make a room out of it, and choose barracks (Y). The make a room thing is how you make dining rooms as well

3. In general - only workers can create their own workshop (some need masons and architects too) - so if you don't have a mason, its never going to be built. If you want to assign a dwarf as a mason simply select him with <v> choose <p> <l> and press enter to toggle Masonry. You DO need a building material to create a workshop, when you set it down you had an option of materials - you don't need a BLOCK, but you can make it from a block. Your best bet is to use raw stone.

And remember - Losing is fun :)

Well, fort #! has fallen. Killed by an olmman  :P.

For the military, i did recruit my miners and my woodcutter. But they just stood there, even when the Olmman was right in fron of them.

I also remembered another question. When i tried to put in graphics, it only partially worked. My miners got the graphic, but my woodcutter and stoncrafter just became a humanoid colored blob. Also, all my items didn't change
For the character sets i got up to the point where it said on the wiki to the modify the init, unless i'm doing something else wrong.
For the graphics set, i don't know what it means  when it says to replace the /raw/graphics/example_text.txt. Can anyone tell me what this means?

I am now going to set up a new fort. Unless i have more questions of course.
