Orbswards - Lost Truths
« on: June 16, 2009, 08:08:26 pm »

On hiatus. I made the story too complicated for there to be a reasonable conclusion :(

Foreword

This is the first time that I am doing something like this ever. I am not much of an author but I always did enjoy many of the community games that have taken place with a bit of story involved. This is also an attempt for me to get a bit more involved within the Dwarf Fortress community and to keep things a bit more fresh and get even more enjoyment out of the game. I will not alter gameplay to fit the story. I will fit the story to the gameplay. However, there will be backstory and such involved to have everything make sense. This is not a community fortress. It is just going to be a story of the game. I'll try my best to get the best picture quality. Hope this turns out well and that you enjoy it!

Part One

Late 199

Civilizations speak of peace but act in war. Promises are made only to be broken. Innocent families are devastated by the political climate. These times make me worry. It is hard to be optimistic about the future when the present looks so bleak and there is very little that anyone can do. The recent conflict between the Elves and the Humans hurt more than just the parties involved. Much more than anyone could know.

Truthfulness. Does such a concept exist anymore? I doubt it. Lying and deception has become a skill to master and an art to teach. Perhaps one must avoid the truth to survive.

Late 200

I sent out someone I dearly trust…hard to find such a great individual these days. Along with his group he ventured out into the wilderness and traveled several months to the location. It is by far the best place to start. Away from the rest of the world but close enough to get some use out of them.

Difficult terrain but with a good amount of elbow grease and some good luck it will become home to many who seek it. A perfect sanctuary from the rest of the world. The lack of wood is a serious detriment to our cause. However, this is where the rest of the world can prove quite useful. The greed and selfishness of civilizations can be used to our advantage. I am glad everything was prepared according to plan.

In our language this place shall be known as Vabokzalis but around the world it shall be known as Orbswards. This place is a beginning…and an end.

Part 2

A conversation taken place in a Dwarven Tavern two weeks before embarking. The two individuals can not be identified.

“It is good to see you again. Hope the wagon ride here was comfortable.”
“…”
"Good to hear it. I made sure that nothing went wrong."
“…”
"I do owe you an explanation but before I begin have a drink on me."
“…”
"Of course. You haven’t changed a bit have you?"
“…”
"Yes. Well let me start me start off by saying that you are one of only few people that I can trust which is why I called you here today."
“…”
"Well…uh…that isn’t to be discussed right now. The fact still remains that I have chosen you for the task at hand."
“…”
"We have seen a lot together you and I. Too much for any one being to handle. I remember how scared you were during your first time in combat”
“…”
"I remember. You don’t have to worry about that. It isn’t the reason I asked for you to come. I need your brain not your sword."
“…”
"During that war everyone was ordered to be on guard. Men and women alike. Even those unfit for combat were called to duty. That is how silly things were back then. Not a single good thing came out of that war."
“…”
"I remember you bragging about coming from the Mountain Home and how you designed their defensive system."
“…”
“Right. This is why you are here."
“…”
"I trust you not to reveal anything about our little conversation."
“…”
"Good. With your help I wish to construct an outpost. A place above all other towns, cities, or ruins. Home for those who deserve it."
“…”
"How can I? That is the wrong question my friend."
“…”
"Just because you haven’t doesn’t mean you couldn’t."
“…”
"There are plenty of reasons. The resources available to us are rich and great. It will give you another reason to brag once the world has seen what has been created."
”…”
"I’m afraid not. No one can know what is really going on here. You must take a lesser role for the good of our new outpost. You must let someone else believe that they are in charge. Spread my ideas and let others act upon them so that they can come to fruition.
“…”
"You will be the driving force in the expedition but if someone were to find out who I am they might take advantage. I can’t take that risk."
“…”
"You don’t want to know."
“…”
"You have put a great deal of trust in me during the war. It is just a shame about what that war did to you. I hope you can trust me again."
“…”
"Of course. I’ll just get myself another drink."
“…”
"Okay, let us go over the specifics."

1st Granite, 201

A new year has dawned and so has our new outpost. This fortress will take its first step into brining in the new age. From this point on I can manage the direction in which it takes. I can only lead from the shadows.

2nd Granite, 201

One day into carving of the fortress and native copper was found. Looks like I was right. This is surely a sign for things to come.

12th Granite, 201

It has been reported that there was trouble setting up the initial farm. Without proper irrigation this is the best we can do at the moment. Difficult, but manageable.

2nd Slate, 201

The farms and stills are now complete. Basic survival needs are now met.

13th Slate, 201

Without proper bedrooms the dwarves sleep on hard rock. Not to worry. Their hard work will be rewarded soon enough.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

27th Felsite, 201

The industrial backbone is now complete. Every single one of the dwarves now has the ability to do their jobs to the fullest capacity. Morale is high despite the poor availability of recreation and resting areas. I am quite pleased.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

13th Malachite, 201

The first phase of the fortress is complete. All basic needs are met and everyone is ecstatic. The dining room is a bit more exuberant than what I had planned for the beginning.

201, Mid-Summer

Now the fortress is ready to…
*Sound of a door creaks as it slowly opens*
Huh?!
*A weapon is drawn*

Part 3

Life has its way of throwing little surprises every once in a while. Funny how those surprises are always unwelcome. I often ask myself how different my life would have been if I took an apprenticeship under a carpenter or a mason instead of being raised as a solider. Ignorance is bliss. Sometimes I wish I didn’t know so much about this world. I’m tired of running. I’m tired of looking over my shoulder. Tired of lying to myself.

14th Limestone, 201

Due to recent conflicts I have changed my location a bit closer to the fort. I live off the land but I do what I can. Months have gone by without any major developments. Miners are digging deeper into the earth to find gems and deposits of metal. Today marks first contact with the rest of the world.

15th Limestone, 201

Traders are already hoarding what does not belong to them. Harmless animals of this region are being slaughtered for unknown reasons. If only they cared enough to take care of the Giant Eagle around the area I would be most grateful.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

16th Limestone, 201

Despite the poor behavior of our dwarven brethren I am willing to overlook this for now. Mild trading took place. Many items at the depot were not worth trading for.

21st Sandstone, 201

The first of many outdoor locations is now complete, but for some reason there is a missing statue in the structure. More importantly, cave adaptation can be troublesome and many steps must be taken to avoid it.

Mid-Autum, 201

Migrants are traveling toward the area. Time for me to crawl out of the shadows.
