Migrants were too nervous to make the journey this season.
« on: June 16, 2009, 10:49:20 am »

I have 126 dwarfs and only 5 have accidentally died throughout the years.

I discovered adamantine and the migrants after that didn't come with a king, but did come with a count and tax collector.  The count has on an artifact bed, coffin, and cabinet and the rest of the nobles have 90 % of their needs met.  There has always been plenty of food and drink and as of the message I have a full 12 x 26 food stockpile and then some.  The only thing that gets into my buffer zone is an occasional kobold, but they are always quickly taken care of.

There are very few goblins.  I only have 3 snatchers in cages and they have been there for ages.  There are plenty of mountain gnomes, but they have never been a problem.

Dwarfs are generally pretty content.  Lots are ecstatic and they are pumping out babies pretty fast.  I numbered 11 babies and 6 are children now.  The fort has generated 1.6 million and I have exported over 100k.

What gives?  Should I export more?  100k seems not so much, but most of it was given away over the top from trading.  Should I have offered it instead or is that not the issue?

It said they were too nervous?

I've never had that happen, even after a 26 immigrant wave was slaughtered viciously by giant cave spiders (plural)

Also how did you get to 126 dwarves with only 1.6m created wealth after discovering addy?

The adamantine was found when digging for gems and ore not too far from main stairwell.  I have an atrifact cup worth 400k and a crossbow worth 300k.  There are 7 other artifacts worth a few hundred thousand all together.

I have made a single well crafted adamantine statue and a few dozen gold and silver furniture.

The fort is nearly 5 years old.

The first year for migration was a little slow, but after that I got massive waves in the 20s with little break between each.  Birthrate helps; my population is now 128.

Edit: 131  (10 children 9 babies)  A fort I abandoned a while back had over a dozen babies at one point, but most of them were born from women in my military.  They just carried the babies around with them while slaughtering goblins and such.

Just had my first ambush and it was nothing special.

Does anyone know what the migrants were nervous about?!?

You have food
You say you've only had 5 deaths
You don't seem to say holy crap I'm dieing things
Have you cleared the HFS?

If everything is in order and nothing horrid has happened, I don't know what to tell you.

I've been having this issue too, I was under the impression that it was because the fort wasn't producing enough, but since you hit extra 'spensive adamantine, idk what the problem is.

It could be that your dwarfish neighbors are warring and are too nervous to leave, but Idk if this can actually happen while playing.

1)if you have had a lot of sieges or ambushes lately
2)maybe the
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
not being cleared out
3)lots of deaths

those are the only reasons that I know about that might cause nervousness in immigrants (there are probably many more). I recomend just waiting for the next immigration because you do have 126 dwarves and I assume that you don't need any desperately at this point

The same thing happened to me after I hit the population cap, so I believe it's the games way of telling you that the population limit has been reached.

I can't bring any  hard evidence but what I will offer is some personal experience.

Migrants "being to nervous" can be linked to deaths, especially the deaths of nobles. However I've found that ocassionally I'll get that message even when there is no discernable cause. As for Population cap, well that may well happen with a cap but I've never set one and I've recieved that message at well below 200 dwarves so I think it is highly unlikely.

In other words, if you've kept the factors that cause the message, such as deaths to a low and have a high wealth it may be caused by an outside factor you have no control over.

Migrants, like all dwarfs, are completely irrational.

I've been playing an "isolated community" challenge - the initial 7 dwarfs burrowed into the hillside and then sealed themselves in with a carefully planned cave-in.  Since then, I've had no contact with the outside world.

Every bloody year, I get 20+ migrants arriving.  They appear at the edge of the map, wander around aimlessly muttering about soap making and then either go mad, starve to death, or are killed by the massed goblin hordes.  No migrant has ever survived.  Over three hundred of them have died horribly.  And yet every year, it's "Despite the danger...".

I wouldn't mind, but if one of the migrants has a fey mood they keep trying to pathfind to a workshop and it really hits my frame rate.

I was sieged by two waves of humans for about two years, and I got a message saying no migrants would travel to my "cursed deathtrap".  Had lots of goblins and a couple of dragons too. And four nobles died, er, by accident.

Maybe this message would show up if you were stealth-sieged by elves.  Just a guess, haven't had an elven siege myself that i know of.
