A new mosaic / mural for your consideration
« on: June 15, 2009, 11:57:49 am »

I just finished my latest fortress and uploaded it to the DF Map Archive.  I have a mural / mosaic in the fortress that I'd like to hear your thoughts and opinions.  (Positive and negative are fine.  I'm curious what you all think.)

Here's the grand mural:

Also, there's another mural in the fortress.  Not nearly as large or detailed, but I thought I'd mention it as well.  It was the first mural I've ever undertaken:

Thoughts? Ideas? Constructive criticism?

I am dreaming of a much larger mural project for later on, so the feedback will be nice to have.

So,  how did you get the soil lines?

That is phenomenal dude.  Did you use an image==>ascii  converter to plan it?

What program did you use to generate the colors for the tiles?

(If you did it freehand, just ignore this quesion - I don't think I can handle being that depressed.)  ;)

I like this, ingenious use of grates, roads, etc. Well done.

Very well done, my dwarf art skills include painting walls with blood and thats about it, so this is very impressive.

One tile roads made from rough stone, perhaps?

Yah, it sounds like minecraft with content, you have obviously missed the point, people dont like content, they like different coloured blocks.
Seems to work fine with my copy. As soon as I loaded the human caravan came by and the world burst into fire.

I used rough rock roads for the wavy lines.  The constructed floors were the plus symbols. The hash marks (pound signs, or whatever) are floor grates.  There's also some one square bridges mixed in the trees (the shape is hard to describe).  Also there are a handful of upright spears.

As for the program I used, I just used MS Paint.  I started out with a really small picture of that mountain scene (a thumbnail from a search engine) and expanded it by about 500%.  Then I just made all the colors uniform so that I could figure out what squares to put where.

Here's the original image:

After that, it was just a matter of alt-tabbing and lining up the image with the blocks as I constructed it.

Thanks for all the comments!  I'm looking forward to building my next one (which should be a bit larger).

Very nice. I really like the mountain one. I might have to try something similar in the future :) Currently I'm working on a fractal pattern for my fort's housing floors that look like giant gears (the initial layout was broken by a chasm).

The second one; is it a DNA double helix? What's the block in the center? It kind of looks like a dwarf head.

The mountains were amazing. The trees were kind of weird, but still incredible
