Functioning Fortresses
« on: June 15, 2009, 01:09:38 am »

First off, sorry if this isn't the appropriate forum, it seems like it would belong here.

Basically this is a thread to download forts that are at a steady place. This will allow beginners to see what a developed fort looks like, firsthand. I know we have the MKV25 Map Archive, but that is basically giant screenshots. This is actually a list of forts with steady agriculture, defense, industry, etc.  Sorry if there is already something like this.

By the way, I don't know how this would work exactly, I guess you should just post a link to the download of the save game and I will add it to the list? Sorry, but this is the first time I have ever done something like this.

The List!
*WARNING: I recommend scanning all Downloads with an antivirus software, it takes seconds and can save your computer*
*Note: I do not test the forts before adding them here, for all I know its a room in a frozen ocean that is about to melt and drown the dwarves.*

I suppose I could try to make a functioning stable fortress...

This is a good idea, a lot of people have been asking for in-game tutorials and pre-built fortresses shipped with the game in the "what turns you off of DF" thread. This and the video tutorials on the wiki are the next best thing I think. I'll try and make a real basic fortress in vanilla DF for your list.

There is no such thing as a stable, functioning, productive and well designed fortress.

I would beg to differ. Current fort has had about 10 casualties in 25 years, no major disturbances and a decent (but boring) site with magma and magnetite. It's about as stable as you can get. I'll upload the whole thing if someone can recommend a decent file-hosting site.

Okay, so today I messed with it and now the magma vaults are kinda broken. Aside from the magma-powered metalworking factory not working untill the magma rises back up to a useful level, the fort could go without supervision for quite a long while. Could be just what you're looking for.

'Course, now everyone gets to see my uninspired, blocky construction methods. :( I forgot to mention that trading is the sole source of wood here, but there's about 10 billion tons of random shit that can be traded away in the crafts section and all civs have trading access.

I posted a thread once about a well-functioning fort of mine.. It even has coins + economy, without that causing trouble..
Here's the thread:

Actually it's quite easy to create a stable, functioning and productive fortress....as for design..well I was never good in that.  ;D

I have never reached the point of stable and functioning.

I tend to mess up with the function creep. Basically I get in a never ending cycle of having outputs from one industry that are going to waste so I have to delegate some dwarves into turning that waste into useful products which then go to waste so I have to set some dwarves to process and arrange that waste. It ends when I realize that I basically have a fortress of nearly 100 just to keep up with the output of a single farmer planting plump helmets.

Then I check my food stock... 2000+ units of Dwarven wine.

Hm. Most of my forts DO reach the 'stable and functioning' part, but it's an illusion. My last fort ended up with a constant output of prepared food and huge piles of raw materials, before everything ground to a halt due to my magma-based megaproject.

Elves do it in trees. Humans do it in wooden structures. Dwarves? Dwarves do it underground. With magma.

I have a very stable fortress. We had a tantrum spiral 'bout six or seven years ago that brought the population down from 130 or so to about 40, but I was eventually able to stave it off by building a legendary dining room and cranking out coffins as fast as my masons could handle.

Nowadays, I have eight champions, a platoon of marksdwarves, and I've moved just about everything from the old hill much deeper into the fort, far from goblins and their pointy arrows of death. I lose a couple woodcutters and a fresh recruit every siege, but nobody seems to care all that much. All I have to do in terms of food now is keep a balanced ratio of plump helmets to dwarven wine.

I do, however, have HFS on my map. After I get a king and some more elite marksdwarves, I'm going to crack the HFS for the first time. That'll be fun.

Shotrake

A fortress with 210+ dwarves, ~3k each of different sorts of prepared meals and drink, fully functioning industries of all stripes (clothes making from pig tail farms to dyers, smelters/forges/woodburners, carpentry, jewelers, butchers).  Edit:  I forgot. There's no sand on the map, so there isn't any sort of glassmaking industry.

Got the queen legitimately.  The nobles all request stuff like warhammers, brass items or crowns.  I think the Queen Consort has expensive tastes, but that hasn't reared it's ugly head yet.  I have like 20 or 30+ champions, so sieges are a push-over.  With just a bit of input, the place pretty much runs itself (at about 20 fps with everything turned off).

To be honest, I got bored with it.  The place doesn't have anything like magma, HFS, chasms or other underground features, so outside of wanting to create an neat fort around some interesting land formations, I accomplished the goal I set for myself.

I have the save and will upload it if anybody's interested.  It's vanilla and 40d, before the 40d 1-11 versions of the game (but I think it's still compatible).

Edited again:  Ok, I uploaded it.  http://dffd.wimbli.com/file.php?id=1118

stable? most forts suffer severe unemployment problems over 60 dwarves.
under 20, and its hard for necessary things to get done.

hauling is the single most common employment thing ever.
