Giving to charity
« on: June 14, 2009, 03:48:45 am »

Me and my friends have decided to be generous and pool some of our spending money to give to charity.

As much as I'd like to give to Toady, I think my friends would like it more if I helped starving children or something.

Can anyone steer me towards a really good charity?

Preserve the toad :P

Hehe, yeah, I've been looking for the same thing myself. Try the local orphanage? They could really use some money, and you're helping someone closer to home.

If we want to be logical and serious then give to Toady, As the children, if they grow up will have more children, who will then have more children which will contribute to overpopulation and lead to the death of all humans.

However if toady has Children, then we will have descendants to work on DF 1.0

If you don't mind donating to christian charities, I personally know the people involved in getting things done in this one. Though if you disagree with their methodology or anything, it is understandable though.

Good charity that I'm in because of cancer; Make a wish. Helps children who have life threatening diseases get one wish to go wherever they want or meet whoever they want to.

Personally I'd just give it to a charity that helps reform people.

I would say HIV prevention. Most importantly performance groups as opposed to large organizations that spend a good deal too much on their management. I think the Red Cross is one of such wasteful organizations.

So yes, spend it on something where there really is not much of a management level. Like a small soup kitchen. Or a performance group that wants to teach about diseases in order to prevent them. Or fire department fundraisers.

Now I really want to know what he said...

Also I suggest donnating to a charity that is doing something for the good of mankind as a whole, such as a cancer research one rather than one that focuses on a small group of people like an orphanage.

Donating to the toad is not charity, it is paying for continued work on DF, so ultimately a selfish cause. (Though morally mandatory if you are playing DF!)

Donut money to your university for research.
Donate to X-research.
Sorry, my faith in the use of general charity has been low lately, I cannolonger believe outside help is helping anybody.
If you must donate to a cause that interferes in faraway places, choose a small and hands on effort, not one of those big ones that use 80% of their proceeds on personell and advertising.

My advice would be to do something with Africa. Make sure to find something that actually uses the money, and not gives it to the government to spend.

This is a good one:
