I personally think any behaviour is fine, as long as:

1.  Noone is harmed without their consent.
2.  It is done in private.

And any other obvious things I've missed from those two (for the sake of argument, let's say that "noone" includes animals).

My main problem with robots is this.
If it is possible to have a brain that has subjective experiences, it should be possible to build a robot that can too.
If it is possible to have a robot that can have subjective experiences, it should be possible to build a computer program that can too.
Therefore, in 100 years time or so, characters in video games could actually have feelings.

I actually think games where the characters had realistic simulated emotions and personalitys would be cool. Can you imagine a squad based tactics game where you slowly see your troops succumb or even begin to enjoy the horrors of war?

What, that the little people in your video games are actually terrified/upset/miserable while you're hammering the A button to get them to shut up? And that they're actually dying when you bumblingly send them in to take on an ogre alone, or whatever?

The moral outrage would be incredible. I can't think of a single group of people other than children and stereotypical capitalist pigs who would tolerate it.

We won't know until we have an adequate understanding of how a "Conciousness" arises in the first places.  Some have speculated that the internet itself may develop some form of concious (but not really as we know it) if it is allowed to start calculating how to improve itself.
