Because these are so popular... MASSIVE BATTLE
« on: June 13, 2009, 03:03:48 pm »

Persistent tactical campaign in ASCII. Split in three parts: deciding what do do outside battle(travel and such), choosing units, deployment locations and reqiment before battle and actually fighting.

Unit library:
@ Us. If we die, we lose. 3 lives.  7 attack 11 defense.
s Soldiers, basic grunt. 3/7
S Sergeants, tough melee dudes with shields they can use against archers. 3/8 (3/12 when shot at)
b Bowmen, ranged attack but sucks at melee. 4/6(2/6 when in melee)
m Mercs, will run if 50% casualties are taken. 5/6

Available units:
@ 1, this number isn't going to change much.
s 30, split in 5 squads(6 each)
S 10 split in 2 squads(5 each)
b 15 split in 3 squads(5 each)
m 20 split in 2 squads(10 each)

Available abilties:
Arcing Blow. Attacks 4 squares at the same time. Automatically used by us in melee.
Indirect Fire. Attacks anywhere on the battlefield with a one turn delay(requires leading targets). Used by bowmen.

Available equipment:
Lighter Armor. Reduces us to 7/10 but allows faster movement.

Known enemies:
The Undead
f Fallen. Slow undead shambler. 1/5
R Reaver. Very slow but has Arcing Blow. 7/8
N Necromancer. Can raise Fallen in some occasions, very long range. 2 lives, 3/11

The story so far:
After the attack on our home city, we fled into the wilderness and with all survivors we could find. We enlisted the aid of some mercenaries but were caught in the open by a marauder party while crossing a forest clearing.

Cyan is our deployment zone. Our goal is to reach the edge of the map. Killing the necromancer will reduce the amount of enemies that give chase later. The main enemy force is nearby and will join if we delay too long.

Hints:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Battle will commence once we agree on what to deploy.

I think we should take lighter armor and maybe about 12 soldiers, 5 bowmen, and 5 sergeants. We should probably deploy in the top left of our area and just make a run for it. Let's save the mercs for when we need a decapitation strike.

I agree. Volley fire to our north while running, abd maybe get a lucky shot on the Necro.

I agree as well, especially since there's only one Reaver to the north of us.

The necromancer is out of range of the deployment zone for regular archery, only indirect fire has a chance of hitting him and his reaver escort. That or sending men forward in their direction.

What kind of formation do you guys want? Personally leading the charge while the archers attempt to attack the reaver or safely staying in the rear and letting the sergeants screen everybody else from it or something else?

I think something like this:
  W S S S  W
W W S @ S W W
W W B B W W
WW B B B W W

Make a hole in the left hand side of the weak fallen side, and flee towards the abandoned mansion in the distance.

Deployment+turn 1

Our forces as we deploy.

At the end of turn 1.
The enemy necromancer orders his minions to group up in you most likely escape route and tries to encircle you with the rest of his forces. He and his rear guard stay in place. The only bowman in range and sight of anything tries to shoot but misses because he was moving at the same time.

Send two groups composing of six s west and north, aiming to occupy the two nearest groups of Fallen at the North-Western point. Have the b move at half speed and provide covering fire for the s. Finally, move the S and @ to attack the North-Western group of Fallen, and try to punch through.

Let the bowmen stand still since nothing's going to get them immediately, and have them concentrate fire on that one Reaver to the NE.  Have the six squads of soldiers on the right stay with them for safety - the whole group should be ready to run at a moment's notice.

Everyone else, make for the NW.  @ should be the spearhead, being considerably tougher than whatever attacks the fallen can dish out.  Have the sergeants screen on our upper right, in case the Reaver makes a dash.

Incorporating Aqizzar's suggestions I agree with ToeBighter.

At the end of turn 2.
We personally charge into the nearest clump of Fallen, reaching the lines before the rest because of our lighter armor. A successful Arcing Blow wipes out three of them but in return we are wounded, something that could have been prevented by wearing tougher armor. The rear guard shifts positions to avoid friendly fire. The archers open fire at the Reaver and in a flurry of lucky hits the beast falls with four arrows sticking out of vulnerable spots in it's hide. The remaining archer with no LOS on the Reaver shoots at a nearby Fallen and kills that as well. The other elements of the undead continue advancing while the necromancer and his guards move north to behind the eastern line. The sounds of battle must have surely been heard by the main force and several new enemies will be converging on our position soon.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Tomorrow's updates might be a bit slow due to all files being saved on my main pc and not on my laptop, forcing me to re-create the map from my own screenshots.
