unconcious breathing

so, apparently you have gills while your unconcious in adventure mode?

the current fort I am testing (it is a puzzle/trap fort) has a cave-in that knocks into a pool of water and knocks you unconscious but you survive just until you wake up, in which case if you have swimming your a lucky bastard and can pretty much just swim through that trap

Of course, why else would dwarves risk life and limb to retrive one sock during a full scale siege onslaught.
The depressing thing is that they quite often lose life and limb(s) in the process.

No, I think you just wake up before you suffocate.

It is commonly known that the Dwarven metabolism comes to a complete halt as a Dwarf loses consciousness. This can be observed if a Dwarf in Fortress Mode passes out in a river. In a procedure that is very similar to the "Schroedinger's Cat" theory, there is a set chance every moment that a kitten dies, jumpstarting his metabolism, which would then lead to drowning... Or something.

Does the same happen with magma, or are they incinerated anyway?

Falling unconcious while in magma does not protect you from being incinerated.

This phenomeneon is what allowed a dwarf to survive for several months next to a hippo underwater in one of my forts. Needless to say...their breathing while unconscious must mine out the water from bove their mouths and noses, allowing them to breathe.

Their beards get in their mouths while unconcious, acting as a rebreather

It happens. I used to breathe under water, until my 0th birthday. No gills or anything.

The dwarven economy is just a stand-in, from what I understand. As it is, it represents an actual economic system about as well as poison ivy represents a salad.

Maybe they're just floating on their backs, when they wake up then they panic and start to drown?
