Incursion. Almost of all of the mechanics are described in the game, it allows you to have multiple saved games and to reincarnate character who don't make it to level 5.

That said the only thing I check the wiki for is god information.

Well I'm handling myself quite nicely on Gearhead, still I suck at roguelikes (sometimes I don't have the patience on the turn battles etc, then I start getting pwnd because I rush on everything)

It honestly feels like a lot of their problems came from the fact that their entire team was composed of cats, and the people who were supposed to be herding them were also cats.

Actually, you have to download

gh-1100-sdlwin.zip and
gh-1100-sdlimage.zip [extract to the same directory]
I recommend playing it without the tiles. The ones in gearhead are pretty ugly... :-X

Anyway Im suprised no one has said IVAN yet. Theres a good game...

So, what would you guys recommend to a more casual player? I played DoomRL so far and quite liked it, now I'd like to try something new, but don't want to spend too much time memorizing wikis while doing so...

Crawl, because Incursion basically means you have to learn how to play Dungeons and Dragons.

Guild is awesome, too.

Well the Easiest Roguelike I can think of is Pokemon Mystery Dungeon... or wait that isn't it... Pokemon Rangers?

What is that game where you play a person turned into a pokemon who doesn't get his true form back leaving him in this backwater world forever where random creatures pop out and beat him up?

One that I haven't played in a while, or even checked if there's been any development on, is Frozen Depths.

I'm going to go look, right now.

Edit: Newest version here.
1.03

In this roguelike, you have to get as deep in a freezing dungeon as you can, without freezing to death. You have a temperature gauge, that goes down as you get colder. Warm clothing (you can wear both clothes and armor, armor goes over clothes) makes you lose heat slower. Eating can raise your body temperature, as can prayer, in some cases. Be careful not to get too warm, as you can develop a fever and you get penalties to attack and defense (IIRC).

Anyway, it looks like he's still working on the game (which is awesome, I expected it to be dead!), with his latest update the 8th of February. Very cool, I didn't expect it.

Off to test the new version!  ;D

Its just angband except with more ice. IMO it should be called "iceband"

No overworld, so it can't be an angband variant. And it's skills and class systems are completely different. And it, you know, bears no similarity whatsoever to angband and it's clones.

You act like no roguelike except for Crawl is worth playing.

Adom? Bah! The walls are ugly and the quests are uninspired! Nethack? Old garbage with boring dungeon design! Incursion? Too complicated!

So picky...

Honestly? They both disappoint me.

I really want to love Incursion, because it appeals to the D&D nerd in me that cut his RPG teeth on P&P D&D. But, as someone has already pointed out, that level 9 cap omits a lot of the fun, and many of the things I would like to mess around with aren't implemented yet.

I discovered Crawl before I found Incursion. It has a lot of neat concepts going for it (a lot of the Gods, Mutations, and a pretty good spellcasting system). My problem with Crawl come from one main direction: the Gods-awful learning curve. If I'm not starving to death on floor 3 or getting killed by the same drat rat AGAIN, I'm getting frustrated by the games horrible lack of documentation. And I'm going to agree with Okenido here: the level design ranges from horribly boring to "how the hell am I going to get past that!" random lakes of magma. I eventually had to stop playing because running my Demon Spawn Chaos Knight of Mahkleb, Eliphas the Inheritor, and his contemporaries Imhotep the Mummy Necromancer and Grah the Troll Berserker just weren't fun anymore.

Incursion, at least, has always been planning to deal with it's issues. I'm not sure I can say the same for Crawl.

TL:DR It doesn't matter what I put here, I'm Inaluct's next Flame-jet target.  ;D

Addendum to the whole crawl flamewar: Crawl isn't bad, its just far too simple and straightfoward for me, DF killed my liking for simple roguelikes and pointed it towards the more complex ones.

Anyway, anyone know were i can get the tiles version of ToME?

mimimimii this is better, that is better

I love DF
I loved UnReal World
I had fun with elona and got frustrated
Don't got patience nor creativity/will to play any dungeon crawl game..
But I'm having fun with Gearhead, also backuping saves so I don't lose my only frigging mech/good save game.
And now a mech-piloting-girl joined me, so tomorrow I'll do some ass kicking if I have the time..

And whats' the point with all "this game sucks" thing? People should play what they feel it's fun for them, not for others.
How many games I've loved, that've been rated 4.5 by many reviewers..

Anyway, let's buy the new EA game because it's probably the best game ever released...[Yes, this was a joke]

Combo post finished. I'm going to bed now;

You know what really sucks? Neverwinter Nights.

Don't ever mix Baldur's Gate with Diablo, things get messy.
