My Futile Search for Variety
« on: June 12, 2009, 10:02:58 pm »

DF, the best game ever. Though having near infinite replay value, I am bored of this release, mods helped for a while, but again I am bored. While waiting for the next release, I have decided to try as many Roguelikes as I can. I had already played Nethack, so I figured I would try ADOM, Elona, Angband, etc.  They all have insane learning curves, which I have tamed in ADOM and Nethack, but not so for the others. The control schemes seem wacky, and are the true challenge.

My point is, I have yet to find a game as good as DF anywhere, and I don't plan to anytime soon. I was just wondering if anyone has played a Roguelike that can take the place of DF for me temporarily.

Better yet, if anyone can recommend a way for me to learn how to make my own, I have yet to find a true guide to Roguelike design. Perhaps because all great Roguelike Developers haven't the time to write a guide.

Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup and Guild: The Roguelike are great.

I don't think I will like Dungeon Crawl, but I will try both recommendations, thanks.

Take a look at gearhead and prospector (you can find prospector on this board).

I play prospector. And I don't think I will like Dungeon Crawl (but I will try it anyway) because it seems like Mystery Dungeon.

EDIT: Guild is what I wish my DnD get-togethers would be like.

The ASCII interface is horrible, and the gameplay is vastly overrated.

have you tried... Incursion?

Anyway yeah Crawl is overated.

Anyway I +1 BishopX's recomendations. Both are a nice change from the norm of roguelikes.

I hope you've already played Unreal World RPG...

You can build stuff there, and kill rabbits and bears and birds...and butcher them, and set them on fire..
Or make a hole and put some spears on it, then on the next day you laugh as a dumb lumberjack got all kinds of damages and is stuck on it.. etc

It honestly feels like a lot of their problems came from the fact that their entire team was composed of cats, and the people who were supposed to be herding them were also cats.

That's bullshit.

Also, Incursion is borderline unplayable.

I second CoWofDooM suggestion of incursion...it does have some stability issues but the crash recovery is pretty good and it's a very enjoyable game.

I would also recommend DoomRL, it's the origanal Doom converted to a roguelike. It's the only rogue like I can think of that has sound.

I'm downloading GearHead 1 now, I love MechWarrior.

Obs: How many ways is MechWarrior different than Gearhead?.. hmm

Why do you love Crawl so much inaluct?

To me it's mediocre at best.

Erm? If you suck?

Stability is not that much of a problem. It IS borderline unbeatable though.

The screen is too big, for one thing; some resolutions can't play it well because portions of the game aren't visible. Also, character creation is tedious and confusing. It's seriously unpolished, too. It'll probably be a good game later, but it has a lot of flaws now.
