The Annal of the Scalded Lands
« on: June 11, 2009, 04:30:12 am »

Hi everyone,
I'm writing a series of stories about my Dwarf Fortress universe, the 'Scalded Lands.'
It has a very.. interesting history and I'm just writing short stories, possibly a series of them linked together, about the events in the history.

I made up a few things in it for a better storyline and literate sense...

I'm just posting a short segment of what I've written so far, please tell me if you like it or hate it...

“To arms my brethren!” shouted a helmet-clad dwarf atop a scarred war-horse.

“Let not one of those foul beasts stand to see tomorrow, and woe on me if even a handful of dust remains of these beasts… I swear it.” the dwarf finished ominously.

Pulling his visor down, the dwarf called out,

“Sapward, how goes the survey of the surroundings?”

“The tidings are not good, mi’lord. The goblins are marching on our position from the north as we speak. We also have received word from our scouts that they have seen a contingent of Raptor-fiends ready to wreak havoc on our men… you already know that the morale of our troops are diminished, and seeing the unholy beasts in action will just make them turn tail and run…” said Sapward in a quiet, modulated tone.

“However, Thane Stoneridge,” he continued, “There are some good news; the Thane of Houndcrest himself has roused an army from the nearby Alnisitons (Warhalls in Dwarvish) numbering over ten thousand, they are ex-“

“Ten thousand!” exclaimed the Thane in surprise.

“-They are expected to arrive by late this night or early the next morrow… provided we can last that long.” Sapward continued grimly.

“Tell me, what is the terrain going to be like?” inquired Stoneridge.

“We are currently camped on a hill, and they are barely a league away from us. Between us, is a shallow bottomed river in a valley. The best place to fight would be on our hill and to wait for them to charge us, that way we have the upper hand.” Sapward reported.

Stoneridge just chuckled and said,
“Don’t worry, those green-faced loons won’t stand a chance.”

“I wished I shared your enthusiasm, sire.”

Stoneridge leaned over and placed his hand on Sapward’s shoulder.

“Camlin, don’t worry, I have a few tricks up my sleeve. And put a smile on your face, eh?” The Thane reassured. “I have known you for over 25 years, I am your god-father for Ikos’ sake… and I know when something is bothering you. What’s wrong?” asked Stoneridge in a calm voice.

Sapward’s lip quivered for a second, before tightening in a thin line.

“My mate, my child and my hearth. That’s what’s bothering me. We are outnumbered, 5 to 1.
Creatures that should have been long dead since the Dream Age are walking and killing us. Our only hope of salvation is in the form of a half-rockmad old Thane who rustled up an overeager rabble of peasants. You want to know my problem? My problem is that I don’t think we will survive, and you are making a huge mistake by not even considering retreating.” Sapward paused for breath. Birds chirped. Nearby Dwarves stopped what they were doing and turned to look at the strange sight. Sapward noticed he was shouting and lowered his voice.

“Well?” he begged, “Won’t you just turn your back to this madness for just one battle?”

Avoiding the desperate look in his friend’s eyes, Stoneridge just shook his head, not trusting himself to speak.

“By the Gods, Daevlin Stoneridge, you are a blasted fool!” Cursed Sapward. “Heed my words if you value my intelligence.”

“When you know that you will lose, it takes more of a dwarf to turn your back and retreat, to suffer the shame and ridicule of your peers . To die the ‘glorious death’ on the battlefield in face of certain defeat rather than to retreat is the coward’s way out. Even if you manage to survive and be hailed as a hero, you ultimately have failed your slain dwarfkin.” He spat out before storming off in a rage, muttering a whole variety of colourful curses under his breath.

Feeling very old, the Thane just sighed and shook his head slowly before dismounting and slowly leading his horse into the stables.

“Come now, Masha, you must be hungry and tired… Don’t worry, I’ll find you a good stabler this time.” The Thane cooed to his steed, the pending battle at the back of his mind.

The battle was going to be more than just a simple slaughter between the Goblins and Dwarves, no. This one was to mark the beginning of a near eternal war.

So.. thats it for the first chapter. I'm gonna put some more up tomorrow, and please take like.. 30 seconds to tell me why you liked it or hate it. Feedback appreciated.

Also, if you want a character to appear in the series just write a description about who he/she/it is, looks like, behaviour, likes and dislikes andd a sample of what they would say in response to this statement:

"Dwarves... those runty little maggots. We oughtta slay 'em all and send them back to the dirt they came from!"

Thanks for reading,

~Cheers

Don't rush it, I prefer quality over quantity.

Yes, I would like a mace dwarf, simply because they are like hammers with spikes.

The Annal of the Scalded Lands Chapter 2
« Reply #8 on: June 11, 2009, 11:43:04 pm »

Hi everyone,
just got back from school and such and I'm posting the next segment of the story up.

This does not include Zestorum's character because I already wrote the chapter before I read his comment, but will add him next chapter.
Enjoy!

Red.           Blood.

Glinting Steel.           Blades.

Cold.

Death.

All Stoneridge could see and hear was the frenzy of his glaive (The pole arm, not the NiNJA weapon.) whistling back and forth, whipping up a glorious cloud of carnelian red. Around him, a fierce battle raged.

When the Goblins first began to charge towards the Dwarven encampment, Stoneridge gave the orders to advance. At first it seemed his idea was to meet the Goblins at the river. It was then that he revealed his clever ploy.

As the green-skinned Horde of over one hundred thousand came mobbing over the valley and down the other side, hundreds of the Goblin soldiers died instantly. the bolts ripped apart and skewered many goblin soldiers together. Their blood ran down the hill, staining it like a splash of an artist's ruby red paint.

The Dwarven soldiers cheered when they saw the carnage. The initial Goblin charge was destroyed. The surviving goblins milled about in confusion. Hearing a whistling noise, the survivors and a few of the dwarves looked up. A black sea of arrows flew through the sky, piercing the remaining Goblins like needles.

The blood ran freely.

Stoneridge had snuck a few Dwarven mechanists to the hill at the opposite end a few hours ago. They constructed a mechanism built into the hill itself to fire hundreds of bolts all down the hillside. The bolts would penetrate the thin backplate standard in Goblin armories. Only the very well equipped or lucky did not die.

The Dwarves cheered even more, but they soon quieted down in horrified disbelief; scores upon scores of goblins marched on, past their dead. In seconds the corpses on the ground were obscured by the metallic crunch of their plated boots on the gore ridden grass.

The Thane’s heart grew cold and he began to despair for a second, but knew he must act or his men's courage would desert them.

CHARRRRRRRRRRGE!!!!” Stoneridge shouted before roaring out a war cry.

Many other voices joined his and it rose until they smashed into the front of the advancing Horde. The initial impact jarred his bones. On instinct he swung his shield forwards in front of him and it answered with a resounding clang, drawing his dagger from its sheath Stoneridge thrust it forward under the shield. It met a slight resistance before the blade went in smoothly.

Abandoning the dagger, the Thane covered his head with his shield just in time to block the heavy blow of a mace. Stoneridge looked up and saw a bucktoothed goblin leering at him. He spat in the creature’s eyes and used the spare second to grab onto the glaive harnessed to his back and pull it out, swishing it in a straight arc downwards. A cry of pain punctuated the swish.

Stoneridge felt the blade of the glaive jam tight in the shoulder of the scowling goblin, which in its death throes jabbed a dagger clumsily into the Thane’s stomach. Ignoring the pain, the Thane grabbed hold of the goblin’s arm and bent it backwards with a sickly snap to stab the goblin in its own neck.

The blood gushed out of the unfortunate goblin’s mouth in pools of blood, painting the water and the Thane’s boots with slivers of blood. He smiled grimly at the sight. Hearing a slight whistling noise the dwarf ducked and barely evaded a bolt aimed for his head. Stoneridge cursed and picked up a scuffed wooden buckler floating in the bloody brook, as his own was dented beyond use.

The Thane roared fearfully. The wild-bearded, bloody faced warrior threw himself into the thick of the battle before crying out, “LET THE BASTARDS HAVE IT!”

In the middle of cleaving bone, a white flash blinded him.

Waves of mindshattering pain erupted all over his body, Stoneridge heard a hoarse scream of pain, it took him a few seconds to realise it was it was his own voice. A cacophony of Dwarven screams played through the air with a melody of cackling Goblin laughter.

Just when the unholy orchestra reached its cresendo and Stoneridge could not bear it anymore, there was silence.

Sweet, blissful silence.
Barely aware that he might be dying, Stoneridge just lay there. Defeated.
Curiously, right before he surrendered to the sweet dark, he thought of Masha and saw a mental image of her chowing down on a clump of grass.

Yagzok hated the dwarves. When the Alpha-Brute commanded him to lead a regiment of some of the toughest Brutes in a special pack to cause immense havoc by assaulting the rear of the Stoneridge Legion, he jumped at the chance to kill the dwarves.

“Also, to keep the Dwarven siege weapons off our scales, I want you to take this key, Yagzok.” The Alpha-Brute said, handing a small tarnished iron key to him.

“Of course my lord!” saluted Yagzok as he reached out and grabbed the key from the Alpha-Brute.

“This key, by the way, leads to the Raptor Cages…” trailed off the hulking goblin.
A big smile split on Yagzok’s face; he was beaming from ear to ear now.

“Thank you, lord!” he said happily.

“Dismissed!” Barked the Alpha-Brute as he walked away, leaving Yagzok with a dreamy smile on his cracked lips. Clenching the keys tightly, he walked off towards the cages, whistling a discordant tune.
Behind him, the Goblin armies assembled for war.
Thank Darmuun for all this luck! This is the month that thousands of Dwarves die! thought Yagzok happily.

He was only partially right.

It wasn't that thousands of Dwarves would die,

No.

It would be millions.

Ok... Chapter 2 done.

Just so you guys know, next Chapter will include some lore into the history and legends of the land.

Thanks for reading! Feedback appreciated!

~Cheers
