Cyrilin is a very sad unicorn because of censorship.
« on: June 11, 2009, 12:53:47 am »

My homecountry, the glorious Republic of Germany... Decided to introduce a mandatory internet censorship, as Australia has done before. This is a severe blow against democracy in Europe, I believe. The reason for introducing a censorship system is to "battle child pornography".

However, in every other country it was introduced (Thailand, the Arabic Emirates and soon Australia)... In every single of these countries, the system was later used or planned to be used to repress the freedom of information and to get rid of unwanted political opinions. In Australia, officially a free democracy, sites of people against abortion, of homosexuals and of religious minorities will have been completely blocked for every Australian.

This is a development that is going through many of the Western countries. Many have already begun thinking about implementing a similar system. Meanwhile, a website owner's house was searched by the German police after he made leaked information about the censorship systems available. The domain he used for his website was suspended despite him having a contract for several months.

I believe this is a travesty. If you care to inform yourself at all about what might possibly happen in your country next, read this.

Thank you for reading this unnecessarily long post.

Australia?

What? I don't have no damn censorship.

EDIT:

This censorship plan has not been introduced in Australia. At least not yet. I haven't heard anything about it since late 2008. I doubt it'll get passed, because so many people are against it.

EDIT2:

Which is why I'm viewing this wikileaks, right now.

We should fight them in the streets. And on the beaches. And on the seas and oceans.

What? I don't have no damn censorship.

Not yet. Know what is fun? Wikileaks is one of the sites that are on the proposed censorship list.

Censorship makes me sad too...
It's completely ineffective.
All it does is empower what's being censored.

Not yet.
Then don't explicitly state that we do.

I apologize. English is not my first language so the expressions I used may have transferred the wrong image.

Don't discount conroy's idiocy yet mate. Last i heard (last month), the new plan was to introduce "optional" filtering for ISP's. That is to say, the ISP's have the "option"* of implementing it or not. This bypasses all the freedom of information laws etc because its not mandatory.

*of course, you just know that they're going to be forced/bribed into having to use it.

Idea: a network (think peer-to-peer or usenet) that shuffles data around in some way encrypted and impossible to block without blocking all of the net, so that if a site is blocked, some computer in another country without censure will get the data and relay it to you, there would probably need other features as well to fool every possible atrocity governments can commit, this is just a rough outline. Someone should make this.

This would, of course, indeed allow people to access child pornography, but frankly I don't get why there is such a f***king fuss about it. Sure, it's disgusting, but so are a whole lot of things. Sure, MAKING it requires a horrifying atrocity to be vomited, but VIEWING it as far as I know dosn't. As long as they don't pay or support the providers of it, I don't see what the harm is. Finding it on the net might keep them from making their own instead.

The abuse suffered from the making of Child Porn (abuse of the children) instills long lasting mental scars, not just the physical action. That's why there is such a 'fucking' fuss about it. Lives are ruined from Child Abuse.

This is true.
I know people who have suffered from child abuse (not child porn, just abuse).

it would only slow down the internet for those who install the program, which you do either to a) access content that would otherwise be censured to you, or b) altruistically allow other people, subjected to censor, accessing content that would otherwise be censored to them. Both of these uses would be worth a bit of slowdown I think

I never argued that MAKING child porn could in any way be justified, I think the term I used was "horrifying atrocity", but preventing people from LOOKING wont result in less of it being made, in fact it will drive it (further) underground making it harder to catch the providers. There was an article about this on wikileaks recently I think, I cant be bothered to look up the specific one right now.

That makes me confused... Better off edit it to be 'censor', Armok.
Really, makes me confused...

ontopic: Isn't this is what Internet 2.0 is all about? To defeat pirates and censor the world?

Most anti-fun people like Jack Thompson are too busy with the economy and global warming to do anything serious. Last video game he commented on, he actually defended it. So bad things on the interwebs are not a big issue as of now.

I say attack the distributors, not the medium!

Anywho, the internet is too dirty and filled with pr0n that it's beyond saving.

Why save it?

I like the direction the internet is going.
