This plumbing suggestion could really revolutionize how water is used in a fort, it would mean you CAN and WILL actually use that water you have sitting in that 200 tile reservoir you made. It would make water pressure and water storage a matter that would require planning and maintaining through a fort, adding in another fun and challenging aspect to the game.

Since brewing will eventually require water, stills (and other workshops) could be plumbed into the water (or magma) system for more productive work, or as a source of fuel.

OH OH OH OH OH OH

Use it as emergency sprinklers.

Have !!!Spider Silk Robes!!! walking around? Spray your entire fortress with 1/7 water! And train them at swimming at the same time!

And can be used for magma farms.

Just thought of another idea and thought I should put it out there.
Water Fountains.

Statues, when plumbed into the system could become a water fountain, boosting it's value and appreciation with dwarves.

Just imagine he has a beard, made of solid adamantine and he is pissing magma on elven traders below him.  Dwarvern decor at its best.

I second the piss-enabling of statues.

I second the piss-enabling of statues.

This is a Masterfully crafted Adamantine Statue. It was rigged to spray water out of it's groin. The water coming out of his groin is yellow.

Urist McDwarf : That's booze, by the way.

Argh! I really want this now  >:(

Sticky!

I mean, it will revolutionise how water is used in a fort, it will allow stills to use water and finally get rid of the waterless booze "exploit". It will add a whole new aspect into forts.

You can't make booze require water until you add the ability for caravans to transport water in barrels; else every site will require a brook, river, lake, ocean, underground river, aquifer, or fiddly tricks with ice.

That actually sounds reasonable.  Very few cities survive without a replenishable source of water.

I'd recommend against invalidating 98% of the available embark sites just because it's "realistic", though. At least for the time being.

Well, once we get the ability to dig wells, it *should* become a lot less of an issue. I think Toady had some issues that preclude having water underly pretty much everywhere--like it does, more or less, in real life--but I think digging a shaft could be handwaved a bit, atleast to the point where it's just a question of how deep the shaft in a given area has to be dug.

I am not saying that stills needing water would be part of this upgrade, I am merely stating that it would facilitate for it, as well as many other mechanical, liquid and workshop updates in the future.

I wholeheartedly support the ideas in this thread.  But yeah, No need for water in alcohol production until water can be made available everywhere in some way, shape, or form.

You could always just import alcohol too.  Alcohol would be a much more practical trade good than water in most cases (more valuable, isn't full of bacteria), and soon you'll be able to give booze to resters instead of water, so water shouldn't be strictly necessary for anything.
