DF not running under linux

Latest entry in release notes.txt is for 0.28.181.40d11.  I am running Fedora 9.

I downloaded the archive and unzipped it into a subfolder of my (non-root) home directory.  Initially, trying to start it produced an error to the effect that it couldn't load libfmodex.so.  Since libfmodex.so was the libs directory, I became root and copied it into /usr/lib/.  Now I have to be root to start it, but it still complains that

SDL initialization failure: could not create GL context
Error creating OpenGL window

These come up as dialogs after the "Do you want to run in fullscreen?" dialog comes up.  According to yum I have all of the SDL and GTK stuff specified in README.linux.  yum does not recognize "libgl" or "libglu" as packages that can be installed.
