Do you think that Cancer didn't exit before stem cell treatment? Or are you saying that it's natural stem cell production happening in a flawed fashion?

Think he meant that it may be caused by our natural healing process gone wrong due to external interference (like chemicals in smoke) rather than research causing cancer...

Yes, precisely.  That's why I used cigarettes causing cancer as an example.

Close, but no sigar (pun intended). It's true that cancer is essentialy "cells gone wrong", but they don't have to be repairing anything. They simply need to be able to multiply. Then if their genetic code is altered in such a way that they'll multiply in an uncontrolable fashion AND their suicide genes have been made unusable, then you´ve got yourself cancer. This is also the reason why skin cancer, lung cancer and intestine cancer are way more comon then brain cancer or heart cancer. Cells from the last two areas are nearly incapable of multiplying themselves, so even if their DNA takes enough damage, they won´t go on to become cancer.

I am not wrong for only listing one way to get cancer.  And most of the time, cells multiply to repair things, at least in the average American adult.  Growth is not common at that point.  See, lot of Americans don't do much in the way of exercise and just stay the same weight and shape.

The average American adulst replaces it's supply of red blood cells onces every 2 weeks and it's skin tissue once every week (I think). That's not realy repairing, just common replacement going on all the time. And that's a far more common cause for cancer.
I wasn't denying that a repair going wrong could be a cause for cancer, but it's not and exclusive nor the primary situation.

Those tissues are designed to do that, and blood doesn't get cancer.  It can't reproduce.

yup. Leukemia is a cancer of your leukocyte(whitebloodcell) mast cells (semi-stemcells. The popular meaning of stemcell has evolved recently).

It's a pretty nasty cancer as cancers go.
Can't just cut it out, they basically have to cook your marrow.
And as with most major organs: you can't live without it, so you need replacement.
I heard filtration techniques (combined with affinity selection etc) are beginning to look promising as a replacement or temporary fix for donor marrow.

The chances of being a match are low, so every volunteer counts.
Chances are you're never needed though, sadly.
For only a little agony you could save a life! How great is that?

Sadly can't donate blood anymore due to some seizures. In a couple of years again maybe.


(You don't just donate. You volunteer and your blood is typed in detail. When a person comes up that has identical blood, you will get called in for a coring. At least that is how it works here.)

That's because blood cells lack a nucleus and can't divide, so they can't mutate and become cancerous.  Every human tissue with a nucleus CAN get cancer, however.  I always thought the reason that cigerettes caused cancer was due to radioactive elements, however.

Skeletal muscle actually doesn't get cancer; when a cancerous cell finds its way into skeletal muscle, it cannot grow due to insufficient blood flow towards the cell.  For some reason, skeletal muscle is the only tissue that does not allow cancerous cells to "pull" veins and arteries towards them.

Cancer is a genetic change and therefore can be caused by a multitude of things, not just radiation.
