Personally I think our government (I'm Chinese) is being very stupid in all the censoring stuff. This is certainly more about politics than porn, but what is wrong with the politics? I live abroad, free from censoring, and have seen how much of the world reacts to us. Not at a personal level - I don't think anyone here really hates China, but the system is certainly against us as a country. Countless lies and biased reports just fuel this kind of, well, whatever. Just look at last year's riots in Tibet and the torch relay. Anything from within China will be labelled "according to state media", and anyone defending China's point of view will be discredited as being paid by the government to comment. I think the Chinese government should let the people see these things and simply realize that we need no more social turmoil.
Having said that, the general standard of education in China is still poor. Knowledge, not ways of thinking, are taught. Most people have little critical thinking ability and will happily follow any rumors, however ridiculous they might be. For example, rumors about a traffic accident's "final decisions" have been circulating on the internet even well after the official source said "we are still investigating", and lots of attacks on the government followed. People do actively make and circulate these things (yes, I guess I was wrong about humanity), and there are enough from within China even with the censoring. As someone living outside the homeland, the last thing I want is chaos back home. It is also true that living standards in many parts of China are very poor. There are certainly many homeless and hungry people. Whatever chaos, which is actively promoted by many of the subjects of this censoring, would only worsen the situation. Without a stable environment in which to, well, do stuff, improvement wouldn't be possible. Maybe people are worth given the whole picture after they become more mature.
Last but not least, ANYTHING CAN BE CRACKED!
Actually I heard it's already been done, so the anger is more on developing such a poor software using taxpayer's money.
