Haulers not hauling
« on: June 09, 2009, 05:37:10 pm »

So I have about 20% of my fortress set as haulers. All they do is move stuff around, and they're the only ones who are allowed to haul anything.

All 10 of them (fairly young fortress) currently have no job. Downstairs, I have a Magma Smelter that is overflowing with bars, and upstairs I have a Bar/Block pile that is mostly empty (a few bins full of iron bars, but around 80 empty squares). The other Magma Smelter is clear, though I use it for just as much, and there are clear 2 square paths to everything in my workspaces. Is there any major reason why they wouldn't clear the second smelter?

You're certain the stockpile is empty, and you didn't just hide the rocks on it?

You're certain that the haulers can reach both locations?

Absolutely positive. My furnace operators can reach both smelters, and the bar/block pile was made on a clay layer - no rocks. Going over it with 'k' reveals nothing. The pile is empty, the path is clear, and the workers are doing... nothing.

The stockpile is set to accept metal bars?

Everything in your orders menu is in order?

check whether or not they have item hauling enabled, whether or not your block stockpile is enabled for those types of items (like accidentally turning off quality levels for acceptable materials), and check the access on your workshops via any and all doors you may have between the two sites which might have become locked..

Usually, its something incredibly simple that was overlooked, or you did something silly without realizing like set "dwarves don't go outside" and part of the pathway is outside.

Check for any locked/forbidden doors along your 'open' path.

Check the orders menu and see if there's something obvious in there.

Having the same problem now in a new fortress. I have a bunch of furniture sitting in my carpenter's shop, with a mostly empty furniture stockpile with only Sand Bags disabled. Also, in my sand collection zone I have like 25 bags of sand, and downstairs I have a furniture stockpile with only 'type' disabled (quality and material remain enabled), which in previous forts has accepted only sand bags for glass manufacturing.

Starting to get frustrating.

To verify a path, <A>ctivate someone as military, position them at one end,  send them to the other, and watch where they go.  That's proof, one way or the other of a "path".

I'd re-create the stockpile, and don't tweak it, just let it accept "all" bars, and see if that starts the flow.  If so, then go in w/ <q, s> and customize.  If not, then the problem lies elsewhere.

Triple check you didn't accidentally forbid something - <d, b, c>.

Make sure there is no "outside" tile that your civilians aren't going to go thru (tho' they should still do the dance.)

If you think it's a bug, reload the game.  Dunno.  :-\

Definitely a bug. I demolished the workshop and was able to place all the beds that had been inside, so there's no pathfinding issues. I very carefully checked and double checked, none of them were forbidden. I even went through and forbid/unforbid all of them, I made and remade the stockpiles in multiple areas. My dwarves simply wouldn't haul furniture, the stockpiles themselves were bugged. They'd build it, and they'd haul the bins into other stockpiles for storage, but the furniture stockpiles wouldn't work right.

I was using an add on to turn posessions into fey moods as well as DwarfManager, so that might have caused the bug, but it's frustrating nonetheless. I've restarted on a different map, if the bug repeats itself without me using the add ons I'll report it.

Once I had a cluttered smelter with a nearly empty custom stockpile. Turned out I had BLOCKS enabled but not BARS *facepalm*

It's usually something small and easily overlooked.
