The [k] key function, a simple suggestion
« on: June 09, 2009, 02:05:35 pm »

When [d]esignating something, or {b}uilding something, I have lots of empty space in the interface column. It can be frustrating wanting to build something, or mine an area, and I don't know what the surrounding rock is unless I exit out and look at it with [k]. I would like to see the information displayed by [k] where ever it fits.. Keep [k] functioning as is for those of us whom are used to it, but also combine it with [p], [d], and {b}, at least, please.

I want the cursor to be active all the time by default, with 'k' display or 'v' display or 't' display (toggle), and you build/designate/etc directly in that mode, preferrably with a single keystroke (even if it means using ctrl or alt combos).

Good idea Sunken. I like that even more.

Overall I see a ton of room for improvement with the GUI. It's a shame it's low priority, because it would improve the quality of the game more dramatically than adding more detail to existing features. It's an improvement that would affect every aspect of game play. As much as I'm looking forward to the military overhaul coming up, that's only one small aspect of the game.

One point about the cursor being active all the time is the fact that the screen takes longer to move around.

As a note, the GUI may affect every aspect of the game, but it does not have any effect on the game itself. The reason it's low priority is because if something drastic happens to certain ways the game plays (ex: the {b} menus change), or looks (ex: different rocks/creatures get added in) then the GUI will need to be re-adapted to these changes. It's much easier to adapt the GUI after all this has been done.

As an on-topic note, I personally feel that this suggestion, while a good suggestion, is not necessary. I like how the game is navigated, and have no problem with a separate 'k' display. Being able to swap between the two views would be decent, but it's almost exactly like how it is now. Right now, you 'swap' by pressing k and exiting the 'k' view. Not much of a difference, IMHO.

I could see this being added to he cycle of displays attached to the tab key, but since the whole GUI is slated to be (eventually) replaced, it would probably be a waste of time.
