That's the best explanation I've ever heard.  Surely the concept of fantasy role-playing wasn't invented in the 1970's.  Didn't anyone in the Middle Ages ever imagine they were somewhere else?

For the curious, the most probable real explanation of the Voynich Manuscript is that it was a elaborate hoax, cooked up by some 16th century bibliophile to bilk money out of Florentine physiophists.  For the modern equivalent, see the Codex Seraphinianus.
