Heroes of Might&Magic (particularily the third part: the fifth one has a very bad AI, four is... different, and the rest is simply worse) might be what you're looking for. Make sure to use extra-large maps. 3 has decent AI (it has maphack tho), and is dirt cheap these days. I'd still say it's worth it.

It's turn-based strategy with RPG elements.

Civilization 4 also works, you gotta need a decent computer tho. The AI isn't even having maphack! It's surprisingly good for such a game otherwise. Again, turn-based.

already played both

and civ isnt a base building game. its more of a spam tech and units game. you can't really hold anything without bashing down them first

Ever since 4 it isn't either. due to horrible balancing jobs that ruin the game for someone like me who is a Technological Bulldozer (I like to build up technology and then run enemies over with my supperior force... Civilisation 4 has the balance of two kids in an imagination war)

I kinda know what you may be refering to.

Somelike like Castle. Does it involve castles?

I think what he needs is Black&White 2. If you forget the Creature somewhere and concentrate on the RTS portion, it's fairly decent, has reasonably large maps (though not nearly as large as Micro wants), allows to build walls and "forts" with infrastructure, has nice physics and graphics. I can't say anything too good or bad about its AI, hadn't played it in a while, but there's no fog of war and the enemies can provide a nice challenge.

Unfortunately, there is no medieval-themed RTS with maps on the Supreme Commander scale (and definetly none with larger maps). You could look at Spring with its mods/games.

If you don't mind rather old games, play Cossacks or the similar American Conquest - they're standard RTS games, a little like Age of Empires (a little), but on a large scale with thousands of units.

Yeah but they didn't develop the multiple fortress aspect of the game very well (Especially since most of them don't have great starting cover like your starting ones do... Plus the fact that Ore is far too rare and valuable to waste on multiple buildings)

So I doubt he could be refering to that.

Oh, and since I mentioned it in the edit, how about "realtime Civilization" - Age of Empires et al? Empire Earth, Rise of Nations? Building fortresses (well, more like cities), huge maps, nice AI... If you set the tech limit to one epoch, you get a standard RTS.

Goodness I liked Empire Earth or Rise of Nations (I can never tell them appart by name)

There was a Pirate game that involved multiple fortresses and a mile wide map. I would have bought it too if I could only remember its name (Unfortunately for me there are soo many games like it it is impossible to tell which it is)

Sid Meir's Pirates! is an AWESOME game. I LOVED it. If I could find it in a store I'd buy it in a pinch.

lol ive played all of those too, except castle, and i couldnt look it up either. name isnt very unique

The Stronghold series wasn't too good on the AI side in my opinion. And on the game mechanics, too. I mean seriously, wtf? Knights bashing down castle walls with their swords? I like American Conquest more.

units could only destory walls in crusader, which is why i prefer the normal stronghold.

and yeh the AI sucked, if it didnt have enough room to make its predetermined fortress parts wouldnt be built and they would pretty much lose right there. and if you started them with a building, or a different stronghold, they wouldnt even build.

the most AI fun there is is making a map thats spammed with outcast tents and wolves.

hope this will be fixed in 3 or crusader 2
