Alrighty...

Spring, 203

1st Granite
I’ve arrived at the new lighthouse. It doesn’t look like much yet. Actually, it looks like something a human would build.
First thing we need to do is ensure a supply of water. I’m going to build a pump desalination machine, and a reservoir to hold drinkable water. First thing I’m going to need is build the reservoir and the components for the desalination machine.

3rd Granite
Scratch that --  the first we need to do is collect a ton of wood. Which is what the dwarves are already doing. Uh, keep it up, men!

There’s a lot of logs floating around in the water, but they are unfortunately inaccessable.

8th Granite
This place is very rainy. I wish we at least had a roof or something.

16th Granite
An elven caravan arrived today. I thought we were at war with these guys?

Well, if they brought wood, we could sure use it.

18th Granite
The even caravan was set apon by goblins en route to the trade depot. I ordered our military – right now, just a lone axedwarf named Edem Dakostemal and two marksdwarves – to attack.

The first to arrive was Edem; too late to save the elves and their animals from slaughter.  His timing was a little off, but you can’t fault his prowess: fighting a force of around twelve goblins, he killed three all on her own, taking only a couple bruises to his right arm. The rest scattered; Edem chased down and killed one more. Then the marksdwarves arrived.

Going through the Elves’ supplies (hey, they can't use 'em), it does not appear that they brought any wood. Also If we weren’t at war with them before, we will be soon, what with them losing their caravan and the rate we’ve been cutting trees.

6th Slate
My desalination system is complete. It’s a miracle! It draws water from ocean and pumps it into a reservoir. I am currently in the process of making a well to access the drinkable water. This water can be accessed from a well I plan to install on the storey above.

Several immigrants came today. Our population has swelled to 22.

12th Felsite
Oh, crap. A glassmaker suddenly abandoned his task and started acting strangely, muttering to himself and  ignoring other dwarves. I suspect he wants to create something, but this will require raw glass of some sort, which will require... well, lots of things.

(He’s possessed, too. Damn it!)

There is a LOT of rotten, unprepared fish lying around. This seems wasteful; I’m going to have our dwarves stop fishing until we are caught up. Our food stores are very, very plentiful by now anyway. I'm also going to have some bone armour made.

Werewolves came. Lots and lots of werewolves. Everybody died. Everybody.

They came in stealth, and killed a whole shitload of dwarves who were running around in the boonies. I tried to cut my losses, get as many dwarves as possible on board, (this was really hard, since the fortress doesn't have too many "indoor areas").

I ended up drafting everyone, stationing them on board, and raising the drawbridge when the werewolves drew too near, but for some reason the dwarves would not touch the lever. I locked a dwarf in the office with it, and he just hung around staring at it. We got boarded, and it was all over.

Does the next person want to start this year over or do I get to try again?

Maybe the lever is owned by someone? Also, the food stockpile, the fishery and the barracks are all inside. And the ekves are simply secretly gathering information about our fortress.

Several notes: If you want them to stay inside make a meeting area inside or they'll just stand around outdoors. They won't pull the lever as military! I was angry about this when i discovered that for the first time xD

Btw you probably can't. But even though we lost, I would like to see some screenies of our little wooden settlement covered with blood  ;D  Was there blood in the sea? I really want to know how it looked.

Sorry, too late... There wasn't really any blood in the sea. Most of the dwarves were killed on the mainland; there was only like ten left that got chased onto the platform.

Meeting area -- good idea. I'll make one out of the new well.

I was aware that they won't pull the lever as military. One problem I was having was that dwarves can't get from the main area to the "office" without going outside. And of course if I set it to "Dwarves may go outside," everyone would run straight for the werewolves.

I ended up drafting one, stationing him in the lever room, undrafting him and locking the door. Nothing.

I've checked the old save and the lever wasn't forbidden or assigned to any specific dwarves or skill levels (I certainly didn't change this last time, either).

I plan to try again tomorrow -- thanks for your patience everyone!
