Smelting foods?

Could I make lutefisk in any way that would absorb lye?

Does fish or lye even work as a regent?

Pretty sure that's correct.

As for the lye, I'm not sure how to do that, but I know you can use it as a product/reagent.

Try it. Thats my advice. Embark with lye and cod. You will know right off the bat if it doesn't work.

Does the fish tag force taking corpses of creature fish?
because vermin fish didn't work

First, brackets within brackets are a problem.  Replace "[ITEM_FOOD:ITEM_FOOD_LUTEFISK]" with "ITEM_FOOD_LUTEFISK".

Second, the smelter doesn't currently look inside of containers for reagents, so liquids won't work period.  Try replacing lye with ash, since one comes from the other.  It's not the same, but lye just isn't going to work.

Oh, and try "FISH_RAW", "FISH" is for cooked fish.

NO_MATGLOSS on PRODUCT lines throws all kind of odd crap at you.
3 million pound rocks that are also aquifers, etc.
Change it to something valid.

I don't think MATGLOSS_WOOD is valid.  NO_MATGLOSS should suffice given you're defining that it's wood in the previous token.

Yeah, I got the guy to put a fish in the smelter, but no products came out.

If i made lutefisk a plant with no seeds, could that be produced?
