Refuse Stockpile
« on: June 08, 2009, 01:13:44 pm »

Why does the list of things that CAN go in one, contain EVERYTHING?

What really goes here, WHY?

What's the best uses for it?

(wiki indicates it SHOULD only contain bones, skulls, globs, corpses, chunks)

It contains refuse, it's really simple.
The options for the refuse pile just list every single type of corpse. haha

Generally, each fortress should have two types of refuse stockpiles. One should accept everything except bones, shells, skulls, and fresh raw hides. It should be placed somewhere where it won't generate miasma (or somewhere where you don't care about miasma). Generally these go outside. The other should accept bones, shells, and skulls, and should be placed near the crafting workshop that your bone carver uses.

As for why everything is in the refuse definitions, your guess is as good as mine.

Um...

nope.

Under corpse, every kind of corpse.

It also lists every other kind of object in the game.

I do not want my artifact mechanisms going there for no understood reason.
I could understand if XX clothing XX or rags went there...

I tend to build my tanner's shop next to my outdoor refuse stockpile, and let the fresh raw hides collect there.  If I don't have a tanner, they rot harmlessly.  If I do, it's a short walk from source to shop.

Fortunately, you don't have to worry about this; dwarves won't send perfectly good items to the refuse pile.

Oh, interesting, I never bothered looking any farther than Bones, Shells, and skulls.

I've known this since I first found out about stockpile customization, but I never bothered mentioning it for some reason, nor do I know the purpose.

In any case, I've never seen a dwarf send any non-refuse to the stockpile, let alone artifacts.

Why does the list of things that CAN go in one, contain EVERYTHING?

Possibly because, for the first time ever in the history of game coding, the writer didn't make assumptions based on their own preferences, but allowed for a player to throw away anything they cared to.

Radical concept, I know.

I understand the concept of custom stockpiles.

Are you indicating that if I didn't have a dump, and I selected an item for dumping, it could go to a refuse pile, but only if it was selected in that list?
