Okay, so I started making this mod before seeing that there was already one here. I took a peek at it and decided it was different enough from mine to continue.
Anyway, the mod itself isn't really ready for any usage except easily obtainable fancy colours.
Explanations 'n' stuff:
Basically, you've got a new stone called magic stone. It's essentially rock that's been infused with ancient magic. You can harvest the magic out of the rock to get raw magic.
Raw magic is the basis for everything. You can also use it to build stone stuff with if you turn off its economic status. Otherwise, raw magic can be used for any number of magic related things.
The first is charging magic stone. Charging magic stone turns it into a rune. You can then use raw magic to imbue a rune with an element. Raw magic can also be used to harvest essences. As it is, essences can be pulled out of thin air using raw magic, but they don't have much use.
Once imbued with an element, a rune can be used to craft spells.
There are two types of spells: constructive and destructive.
Constructive spells are used to create stuff, currently only useful in fortress mode.
Destructive spells however, are launched from a spell-casting device. They can be used as deadly weapons in adventure mode or fortress mode (but your dwarves need a quiver to hold them).
The elements are as follows:

n=neither or both
Earth is plants and stuff. Water is both constructive and destructive because it fuels the growth of earth but also erodes stone. Light and dark are not good and evil, they are simply light and darkness.
The elements combat each other as follows:
Life and death cancel each other out.
Light and dark do the same.
Earth absorbs water and air to grow.
Water extinguishes fire and erodes stone.
Fire burns air and earth.
Air erodes stone and evaporates water.
Stone prevents the growth of earth and fire.
