Lovecraft

Okay, so I recently got the Necronomicon and I was wondering... where the hell should I start? I've not yet read any of his stuff, but I do have the familiarity with the mythos that comes from living on the internet.

Make sure to draw a pentagram on the ground and stay inside of it before reading or you'll go Mad I Just Get These Headaches.

A pentagram inscribed in Solomon's Seal inscribed in a circle ringed with skulls with protective charms engraved into them. That should protect you from just about anything occult.

That not lovecraft, that Day the Earth Stood Still.

Cambel and Rami just happen to like it.

Iä! Iä! Cthulhu f´thagn!

I would recommend starting with The Call of Cthulhu, The Dunwich Horror and At the Mountains of Madness. I believe it is avaliable in Project Gutenberg. On wiki should be complete list of books from Cthulhu mythos (do not forget that Lovecraft was not the only one who wrote books from Cthulhu universum).

Awesome, thanks for actually answering the question instead of just providing advice on defending my sanity and crap. Not that it's not useful knowledge.

Required reading:

Rats in the Walls
The Outsider
Pickman's Model
The Music of Erich Zann
The Call of Cthulhu
The Dunwich Horror
The Whisperer in the Darkness
The Colour Out of Space
The Haunter of the Dark
The Shadow Over Innsmouth
The Dreams in the Witch-House
The Shadow Out of Time
At the Mountains of Madness
The Terrible Old Man
The Festival
Cool Air
Herbert West - Reanimator

I'd suggest reading The Shadow Out of Time and At the Mountains of Madness last, because they bring everything else about Lovecraft's Mythos together and you shouldn't spoil it. :P

Well yes ... but it makes much more sence then. Hm ... guess it depends on everyone´s taste.

Also at least The King in Yellow should be on list

The King in Yellow wasn't written by Lovecraft, though.

But yes.

The Yellow Sign
Repairer of Reputations
In the Court of the Dragon
The Mask

All the others from Chambers book are just romance stories I think.

Some other good stories are:
The White People by Arthur Machen
The Great God Pan by Arthur Machen
The House on the Borderland by William Hope Hodgson

The Willows by Algernon Blackwood is good too.

Also, it's gotta be an Elder Sign, not a pentagram, fools.

http://en.wikisource.org/wiki/Author:H._P._Lovecraft
is my friend and your friend.

So far my favorites are: Call of Cthulhu, the Dunwich Horror, the Fungi from Yuggoth, The Shunned House, The Dream Quest of Unknown Kadath, and one other I can't remember the name of about a hillbilly that was inhabited by a dream entity.
