A mechanic my friend, makes useful good to use around the fortress and and valuable trade goods, he makes a great surplus and it's a great way to get rid of the lower qaulity mechanisms until he is more skilled, if this were a regular fortress that is.

We're planning to make a WOODEN lighthouse out on the ocean, what are you going to use those stones and ores for?

well, if Lav is a stoneworker, he needs stones to work on. Also, since we have erewolves, we will need weapons. Maybe use obsidian, (though I prefer iron and/or steel) but still requires digging. Also, rock is required for mechanisms.

With no digging I meant no digging to build a living in. We are allowed to dig for magma/ores/stones.

For what kind of dwarf you want we must remember our main needs. We need woodworkers and fishers too!

Okay found a heavily forested area in a evil ocean plus magma pipe. Should I embark at the area, save and upload for Scruga to play?

I was thinking brining seven steel axes to get the first woodcutting out of the way and start building, also, a fisherdwarf and fishcleaner and a carpenter.

Point one. It doesn't matter if it's a rock idol or rock mechanism for trade purposes. But it makes a great difference when hauling goods to depot. Crafts are lighter and can be packed into bins. And single bin with two dozen crafts is still lighter (which means faster hauling) than a single mechanism.

Point two. A stonecrafter can do mechanics with the same effect, just a bit slower. But not the other way around.

Do we really need more than one axe? I would rather take lots of wood for the same price and wait until caravan arrives.

P. S. And I doubt we need more than one fisherdwarf.
