9th: Excel (as in spreadsheet)

Thanks for mentioning 'Light of Altair'. Got curious, tried the demo, bought it. I love it. Very much simplified, but somehow addictive. It's more like the mentioned 'Alien Legacy', one of my favourite games ever.

Should try 'Fragile Alliance', not sure whether it runs under dosbox... windows I tried one time I think after I updated to XP.
This game is quite dynamic. You can probably find it in/on abandonia.

I DL-ed LoA recently, tried to install it recently, admired a masterfully crafter 'register now' window lately.
Then DL-ed the demo, the game (images on homepage) looks stylised, haven't tried it yet.

Really, you should give Sword of the Stars a shot ;P The strategic turns are turn based, but all combat is in real time. You're getting the best of both worlds there. Its also wonderfully simplified in terms of planet and economy management. With skilled players, we were cranking out 2-5 turns a minute in multiplayer :P

And if you want the strategic map to be real time you can always set the turns to 1 second! ;D

Edit: I should add, I started playing this game a couple days ago (with both expansions, so it's like 8 races now or so). In some ways it's innovative (space lanes? warp? you can have all!), in other, it's everything that used to be cool about MoO but stopped being in MoO2 - such as the simplified planet interface. I really don't feel like deciding if each planet will have 7 restrooms and 3 shoe factories. And what's up with planets having 1-10 million inhabitants in MoO2? That's like half the population of NY  ???

I've just been playing Lost Empire: Immortals and think it might at least be close to what you want. It is technically turn-based, but it plays very much like an RTS. This is because all player actions occur at the same time at the end of the turn, and turns generally go by very quickly (I often end up pressing the turn button a few times a second). One part that I was concerned about but am now reassured is that you can't directly control combat. However you can set the tactics for your ships beforehand, and there is a fantastic battle replay system so you can watch the battles in glorious 3D. As a matter of fact I think I prefer this battle system.

Even though I've only been playing it for a few days I can easily say that it has quickly risen to the top of my list. It's certainly worth a try and they have a demo on their website.

Hmm, you could look into getting Pax Imperia. It's like a simple form of space empires or masters of orion, but then in real time.

oh my god pax imperia was awful.  it had pretty graphics candy for its time, but the most dumbed-down gameplay and AI ever.  it was a big shame, because it promised so much and failed to deliver.

Tried it for a week and then went back to MOO and VGA Planets.

Never played the original, but eminent domain was fine for a few hours.

Oh I just remember, Imperium Galactica 1 and 2 were also real-time. Too bad I can't get 2 running on Vista.

I can. Or, could. I don't know what the makers of the iso did to the poor thing, but I seem to start the game with all tech unlocked. Which is not fun.

It might be old and useless, but try out Remember Tomorrow. Brush up on your Russian while you're at it. I've made a little patch that translates most of the important info into English.

Ah, thats the thing i was thinking of.  it had potential, i liked managing the roles and ranges of ship weapons -- which were assigned to PD or what.  certainly there is greater detail in games like Space Empires, but you couldnt (for example) put a regular weapon on a PT mount or something like that.  Eminient Domain had some unique features that were sadly wasted on a pretty mediocre game.

Never played Imperium Galactica, but heard good things about them.

What were the series of games where you commanded a capital ship and small fleet?  Nexus The Jupiter Incident, maybe?

You're not thinking of X 1, 2 and 3? Or am I thinking curved?
