no, those were good but those were pretty much elite clones in the vein of Privateer and Freelancer.  best ones ever, but not really the kinds of game were talking about here i dont think.

Im pretty sure I mean this, but i only saw it played once:

Nexus is a tactical game, mission-based (you win, next mission). It is supposed to be a sequel to Imperium Galactica, but has zero "management" options: you don't buy or recruit or do anything, don't even plan the battles, or decide what you're going to fight, you're given a preset fleet for each mission including your "flagship". Definitely story based also, very scripted. Battles are awesome tho.

IG2 was cool, very enjoyable. Pitty the piracy of the early 'missions' was not carried through to the later 'end-game', even if automanaged by AI captains.

I got a copy of the JI, didn't like it though.

Speaking of elite clones: try Oolite (a faithfull rebuild of the original but with modern engine and lots of usergenerated content).

What were the series of games where you commanded a capital ship and small fleet?  Nexus The Jupiter Incident, maybe?

I think your thinking of Homeworld or Homeworld 2.

Actually, I'm suprised they aren't already listed in this topic.

Odd, I know I read the entire first page...  Yeah, I should have spoken up then.  That game he thought was Homeworld was Homeworld.

I just started playing Sword Of The Stars again. Man, that game is probably the awesomest 4X game ever... with the Murder of Crows expansion and all. Even the real time battles are entertaining. Usually an auto resolve allows you to win under normally "impossible" situations (because the computer takes into account numbers only and specially the defense satellites which in real-time are useless most of the time (since they can't get into range and all that)), yet it is more fun to watch it even if you fail.

And pew pew blast pew pew booooom. Awesome.
