cage traps

trap them all and use them as goblin bait

or, even better, if you have dangerous creatures that you want to capture, you can use them as bait to lure the creatures near your fortress

Cave ins are the only way, unless you want to flood the town.
And really, cave ins aren't that difficult to engineer, why so against them? :P

I suspect it has something to do with his wanted to preserve the pre-built above-ground fortress.

Use them to defend yourself against sieges.

I like to build my fortresses on flat open space, i'm agains cave-ins because i don't want to destray my landscape or my (well humans but now it's MINE) buildings

P.S. does traps work on non-enemies?

No, the only way to hurt friendly units is:

1: Cave in, of course.
2: Drowning them.
3: Burning them with magma.
4: If they are knocked unconcious, they can be affected by any traps.
5: Cleverly set up spike traps, which would be the easiest way out of these, if cave-ins are out.
6: And of course, you can just let time kill them, with goblins, wild animals, etc.

i guess the best way for me will be placing weapon traps at the entrance to the food storgage and activating it manually when they get hungry. also humans on the second floors of their buildings can be cut from the rest of the world by removing the stairs.

Can you put a pressure plate in front of the door and tell it to activate with anything but dwarves (and subsequently close the door to the food)?  Or will the pressure plate only do friendly/unfriendly?(ie, not those humans)

If you haven't dug underneath the town yet: wall up the entrances to buildings, pave over the sky, then drop it. Should get every human in the open or on roofs and the rest are walled in.

If you STILL want to off those ones then, well, humans need to eat and sleep. Dismantle all the beds and relocate them and the food stockpiles so you know where they will go and put a dwarven atom smasher or two in their path.

I believe you can set pressure plates to target citizens as well as enemies, though then you'll need to find another way for your dwarves to go(traffic designations should help there. I don't think humans use yours so a sufficiently long path set to high traffic and the short human-run set to restricted aught to work.)
