Ocean Tower
« on: June 06, 2009, 06:19:53 pm »

Ok, I know its been done, and I want to try my hand at building my fort in the middle of the ocean, starting on the shore first, im making it out of green glass btw. I tired once before but i failed epically. What design would you recommend for optimal effectiveness?

Build floors out to the sea, build tower on floors

BOOM.

It's impossible to make it "under" water.

Cut me down like a tree like the lumber or weeds, well discard who you please like the leaves off a tree. Drag me out of the sea and then teach me to breath. Give me forced health till I wish death on myself. Ah! Ha! Ha!

You could make a shaft out of obsidian, build a glass tower inside the obsidian tower, and then somehow destroy the obsidian tower.

How would you do that?

Use SPEED:1 miners to channel it out? I have no idea if that would work.

If you have the rig of the gods, you could drain the ocean through various means. Weather that involves pumps with enough power to move the earth, to chasms expanded to take advantage of water pressure to drain everything, you can do it and build on the now muddy ocean bottom. Then simply block the drainage method after you finish building and you have an underwater fortress.

Also, if you design the entrance a specific way, a kickass entrance gate.

You're running DF on a quantum computer.  It affects the surroundings negatively.

Make a base out of obsidian tall enough to stand above the water several z levels tall. And as wide to as wide as you want your tower. Then drop it. (several methods to do this) It should remain intact as it falls (minimize the fall to the water to 1 z level) Also make it much taller then then you want it to be. so you can either mine away what you don't want, and build under water.

The dwarf diving capsule experiment sort of sets up the possibility for this, the fall was only 2 z level (one air, one water i think) and a 3x3x3 obsidian cube survived so i think a large obsidian plug to fall further.

Now i will attempt to test this.

i dont remember where the threads are, but there are definitly videos up on the DFMA of people pumping out the ocean.  i've also seen a fortress map up there where some dude used some massive magma pumping operations to build a huge sea-wall and series of tower/islands.

EDIT: Never mind.

Yeah, drop a big chunk of obsidian and hollow it out. I can't think of another way to build an underwater tower without pumping a LOT.

There's this one, which I like for it's entertaining description.

For designs, I'd recommend the ring of pumps like the movie's got, but building inside of it so that you don't have to deal with constant interruptions of work.

And then you'll have to get past the aquifer somehow.

Magma greatly simplifies both of these processes.

Again, chasms and bottomless pits are good ways to do it if you can take advantage of pressure. Then there are means of creating artificial chasms for such use.

Here's a world gen someone else made that creates a massive lake that freezes in the winter with spots that have sand/magma.  Just be sure to dive under the water quickly because it takes about half a month from the start for the ice to thaw.   ;D  When the lake freezes each winter, you can dig out some space and put in walls.  The rush to get walls put up and properly sealed before the spring thaw promises many fun moments.
